Middle distance course - this was my best run, both physically and execution. Only three mistakes, none major, and ended up I think 4th in M-65 and maybe 2nd for US eligible. Hard to beat the very capable Mr Lux. The mistakes were on 1, where I was tentative, and ultimately too far right, but saw the stream coming down the hill and turned back right into it; 7 where I was too far left and got just past it before turning back again, and 11, where I followed some folks to a depression a bit to the right, stood looking at it for a few seconds before remembering to get up on the spur. Met Marion Owen today, who was with me off and on a bit during the race.

Note

Left pretty promptly for the long ride home. - 6 hrs and a bit. More than I am good at, that's for sure. I had been home somewhere in the range of 5 minutes when our erstwhile neighbor Sheryl showed up with a pretty good gash on her wrist. She had been mowing the leaves and grass near a stone wall, caught a stone in the blade and it kicked up, bounced off the wall and cut her wrist. She was wondering if it was ok to just deal with it tomorrow. I reached back into my store of extensive medical knowledge and told her, yes, she needed stitches and no, tomorrow wouldn't do. And then it seemed like the right thing to take her to the ER and get her stitched up. All went well, but then not home until 8:30 and too tired to do anything else.

Note

Had a very pleasant conversation at the finish with my new friend Giuseppina while she waited for her son and her husband, all in Italian, maybe 20 minutes. Certainly the best I have done in Italian conversation, although she was very kind and helpful along the way. My vocabulary was adequate to the task. Very good fun.

Brown Y long course. Of course, not so long, only 4.2K. A pretty good run for me, and physically felt better than yesterday. A little distracted at the start, got running by the remote start triangle, and then suddenly didn't know how far I had gone. Ended up leaving the trail earlier than planned, fighting through a lot of green unnecessarily, losing about 2 min or so. Then 2, 3 were fine, 4 I took the right route up to the trail, not too hard that way. From 4 a pretty straight line to 5 through the saddle. Saw Dennis at the bottom on his way from 7 to 8, which got me thinking that was how I wanted to run that leg when the time came. 5 was easy. 6 I got off right a bit, in some green, had to locate off the reentrant to the right. A little wobbly on the way to 7, but found it ok. Overtook George there. Working my way back to 8, keeping the hill on my right. Saw Janet T on my left as I got to the high point of the route. Then the indistinct trail down what seemed like a long time. Saw Angelica on the trail, wearing her new safety glasses. Last few were easy, although mapping was a little questionable on the go control, supposed to be on the end of a medium green thicket, but ran right through it and had to look R instead of L.

Brown course at US Sprint champs. Felt awkward and difficult to be running. Two errors of note. Couldn't find the fence opening leaving 7. Annoying particularly because I had just come through it. So around the long way, cost about a minute. Then at the last control I saw people who appeared to be punching through the trees and ran to them. They were instead taking pictures of the people punching the real control 25 meters back. Oops. But otherwise kept moving and it was not so bad. Got tied up pretty good waiting around after.
