Brown Y long course. Of course, not so long, only 4.2K. A pretty good run for me, and physically felt better than yesterday. A little distracted at the start, got running by the remote start triangle, and then suddenly didn't know how far I had gone. Ended up leaving the trail earlier than planned, fighting through a lot of green unnecessarily, losing about 2 min or so. Then 2, 3 were fine, 4 I took the right route up to the trail, not too hard that way. From 4 a pretty straight line to 5 through the saddle. Saw Dennis at the bottom on his way from 7 to 8, which got me thinking that was how I wanted to run that leg when the time came. 5 was easy. 6 I got off right a bit, in some green, had to locate off the reentrant to the right. A little wobbly on the way to 7, but found it ok. Overtook George there. Working my way back to 8, keeping the hill on my right. Saw Janet T on my left as I got to the high point of the route. Then the indistinct trail down what seemed like a long time. Saw Angelica on the trail, wearing her new safety glasses. Last few were easy, although mapping was a little questionable on the go control, supposed to be on the end of a medium green thicket, but ran right through it and had to look R instead of L.

Brown course at US Sprint champs. Felt awkward and difficult to be running. Two errors of note. Couldn't find the fence opening leaving 7. Annoying particularly because I had just come through it. So around the long way, cost about a minute. Then at the last control I saw people who appeared to be punching through the trees and ran to them. They were instead taking pictures of the people punching the real control 25 meters back. Oops. But otherwise kept moving and it was not so bad. Got tied up pretty good waiting around after.

From Pleasant Valley. After a bit my old friend Mr. Owl caught up to me, and at age 72 he can still hammer. Uncharacteristically, he fell in with me and we chatted for about 6 or 7 miles until I started getting a lot of text messages and sent him on his way. (Rhonda is up in Maine riding 50 miles with Cindy, and by the time of my ride, on her way home again). Then near the top of Sandy Brook, there he was coming back again, so I turned around and rode back with him. Nice to see him after quite a while. He and I were such good friends 25 years ago, riding and running. So this was all a lot faster and more strenuous than I had envisioned, if a bit shorter.

Note

I took the tractor down the trail to deal with some pointy rocks, one of which had upended and injured our esteemed friend walk this summer. Shame on me for not dealing with these things earlier. Two of the three popped up easily, The third was more of a project, definitely iceberg like, and plenty of other rocks came up in the process, so it turned into quite a large hole before I could start burying things again. Then, when I was cleaning up, my skill is not adequate to the task, so a little shovel and rake work, which ended up hurting my side (the vulnerable QL again). Feeling pretty ouchy after all this, but a session on my new roller did me a lot of good and got a nasty knot out of my L glute. Pretty satisfactory, I think.
