Running 47:27 intensity: (1:28 @0) + (6 @1) + (7:10 @2) + (12:07 @3) + (6:47 @4) + (19:49 @5) 4.14 mi (11:28 / mi) +84m 10:47 / mi
ahr:149 max:192 slept:7.75 weight:161.8lbs shoes: 2012 MT101 Green

Stopped by to visit walk briefly and pick up some meet paraphernalia, then R&I went for a short jog at McLean, from the little parking area off Canton Rd for a change.

HR monitor very flaky today. Wore my sling and doubled up by gripping my jacket. That was enough to give my shoulder adequate support.

Hike 31:54 [0] 0.64 mi (49:45 / mi) +51m 39:53 / mi
slept:6.0 weight:162.4lbs

Hiked into the site of the plane crash on Onion Mt with Bill Duncan to observe the extrication of the wreckage. The track is the walk in plus some milling around the site until I turned it off. Pretty fascinating to watch these guys. Three guys on the ground trimming brush, dismantling the plane into pieces that could be handled, clearing an area for the helicopter to lift it from, and picking up debris. Looking at the site today, I was able to see where the plane first struck trees, maybe 50 M SW of the final landing spot. It sheared off a few branches, and felled one mostly dead tree before coming to rest in a group of trees. The workers, all employees of the helicopter company were very careful and respectful of the environment. As a representative of the landowner, I was very satisfied. Bill took many pictures, and he will provide a link later. After about an hour or so, they were ready for the helicopter, and that part of it was very quick. It flew in and grabbed a load, then dropped it off on a flatbed in the cul de sac near where we were parked, and was back in 5 minutes for the next load. I had to leave before they were done, but stopped to chat a while with the group at the cul de sac, including the guy from WFSB channel 3.

This is the walk out.

run and walk with Rhonda. This wasn't quite as sparky as I had hoped. Stopped after about 2 miles + and walked it in. Just tired, hamstring sore. Held onto my jacket after about the first mile, as it was getting a bit much to support my arm.

Note

I'm pretty pleased about how this shoulder operation is working out so far. I was prepared for things to be much worse after the experience I had when the other one was repaired in 2008. This time I was off pain meds after 2 days and I'm feeling pretty comfortable. Obviously a long way to go, but I'm optimistic that it will go much faster than last time.
5 AM

cycling (spinning bike) 30:00 [3] 6.0 mi (5:00 / mi)
slept:7.0 weight:160.4lbs

in the gym while the girls were having yoga class. A very reasonable sort of activity for me at this point.

PT exercises 15:00 [3]

various mild shoulder exercises I am released to do, multiple sets. I'll do these several times a day, not likely to log them again. Three exercises: first is bending over with my arm dangling and slowly rotating my hand in a circle maybe a foot in diameter, first CW (a little ouchy) then CCW (not so bad). Second is holding a broomstick (like one would hold a barbell), again bent over, and pushing from side to side with the unaffected arm, the repaired arm along for the ride. Easy. Third involves a piece of rope hung over the chinup bar, pulling down with one hand while the other rides up. Now that is pretty hard. But ok, and they all feel better after doing them a few times.

Note

I had a call yesterday from the fire department. A private plane crashed last week killing two people. Turns out it landed on Land Trust property on Onion Mt. The fire department is planning to remove it using a helicopter tomorrow, and wanted to let the Land Trust know they were up there and that they might have to cut some trees and branches to get it out safely. So I took a hike up there today to look at it, and may go back tomorrow when they are removing it.

Here is the plane, looking E toward Simsbury from near the ridge line.

Hike 25:00 [3] 1.3 mi (19:14 / mi)
slept:8.5 weight:159.6lbs

Gentle dog walk, about all I feel up to these days. Very lethargic yesterday and today. Sorting out the effects of surgery, meds, etc. Interesting L&F achievement, down 10 lbs in 2 days.

Today is the day the garden club descends on our barn for their wreath-making and on the house for their luncheon. Instead of lolling about on the couch I will either have to shape up or do my napping upstairs today.

Note
slept:8.5 weight:164.2lbs (rest day)

A dog walk in the morning, then a trip to the doctor at 10 for follow-up on the shoulder. The shoulder seems to be doing well. Some modest exercises for now, then real rehab starting in about 3 weeks.

Then home, where I was tired enough that I spent the rest of the day mostly napping.

Drove down with Rhonda to NYC to visit Jess and go orienteering in Central Park. R&J went together, and I went with my cousin's son Jake, just walking, and lucky to be able to do that.

Here is the map. Click on the map to toggle the route off and on. A nice day, but a bit tiring by the time we got home.

AOWN. In the Ramble, going from 1 to 2 we came on some guys with giant telephoto lenses, photographing an owl up in a tree.
