Orienteering race (rogaine) 7:40:00 [3] *** 30.0 km (15:20 / km) +1000m 13:09 / km
spiked:17/19c

Big Muddy 8-hour rogaine, with Rhonda and our old friend John Potter. John was our good friend when we lived on the Vineyard, and a sometime orienteer with a Billygoat shirt or two and also a Highlander and Traverse or so, all in the 90s. He moved to Portland three years ago to become the operations manager for the Oregon State Parks.

The objective of this all was to have a good time and visit, and as John said, "Let's not win." The trip was almost a success, because somehow we won after all, at least for our division, and I think tied for first among all 8 hour groups. Walked at least 95% of the time, and ended up doing not too much of our original plan, as better ideas cropped up along the way. John and I were a big help to each other with the navigation, and Rhonda was her usual fine company. Saw a number of teams several times, but never saw Peter and Barb after the start. One team in particular passed us several times running, but we were walking some pretty efficient routes and spiking all but one or two of the controls we got.

Orienteering race 2:56:38 [3] 13.79 km (12:49 / km)
spiked:14/23c weight:161lbs shoes: 2009 Yellow NB 840s

Billygoat at Mt Tom. Usual mix of good and bad. With some awfully good runners early as they made errors, but made plenty of my own. Skipped 13, which was a poor choice, and had varying degrees of trouble with several controls, including 2, 5, 7, 8, 14, 15, 18, 19. Sore feet, depletion and cramping took a toll late. Physically most taxing goat for me that I finished in time, although I think I was more beat up by the two I didn't finish in time. With various folks early, then by myself most of the middle, picking up Jim Henderson at 15 and with him most of the rest of the way until my last fall on the trail around the pond at the end. A fine course, but a bit too much heat, climb and rocks for me.
