Running race 1:12:55 intensity: (16 @1) + (9:45 @2) + (41:24 @3) + (21:02 @4) + (28 @5) *** 6.23 km (11:43 / km) +155m 10:25 / km

Green Y course at West Pt. Had trouble yesterday with the contact, and my eye was sore this morning, so I went with glasses. Much more satisfactory. I can see the map better and they didn't fog or get too streaked.

Generally a pretty good run with a couple of exceptions:

Lost time repairing the punch stand at #1, then more time going down to the road before finding out the gate was locked. Finally, despite being in contact all along the big hillside, I got fooled by a patch of bare rock that I couldn';t see on the map and turned back to look at the knoll before the control again and work my way in.

Got badly hung up in mountain laurel leaving #4.

Otherwise very nice. Particularly liked the second half of #5 through the finish.

Note

Pretty tired coming home. Remarked to Rhonda that 10 years ago we would have gone for a 50 mile bike ride on returning from an event that early, and we agreed that we certainly didn't want to do that this time. Unpacked the car and contemplated lots of other things that needed doing, but then I had a call from my neighbor Tom, inviting me to play golf. I have been putting him off for more than a year, so resolved to try.

It didn't turn out well. I hit a half bucket of balls and didn't get one of them more than about 2 feet off the ground, or hit any of them straight. Once we were playing, I actually hit some ok shots, mixed in with some real stinkers, but it didn't feel good on my elbow (braced), lower back or right hip. I hit my best shot on the 7th, a drive of 280, in the fairway, but I could feel it deep in my hip, and I took the next hole off. I did string 6 bogeys together, which was pretty remarkable given that I seemed to have at least one shot each hole that made no appreciable forward progress.

I won't be playing again for a while, but I guess I can count it as rogaine practice.

Middle distance race at West Pt. Pretty good run. Came up short on three of the first four controls, but not a severe loss of time. Probably lost the most on #6, where I went right to it, but ran a longer route to avoid climb and apparently dawdled a fair amount on sidehill. A little anxious at the start because we were delayed by an accident on I-84 and had to hustle on the long route to the start to make our start times. Last I looked, 4th iin M60 behind the usual suspects, PG, coach and bl.

Orienteering race 18:47 intensity: (29 @3) + (17:18 @4) + (1:00 @5) *** 2.1 km (8:57 / km)
ahr:99 max:175 spiked:14/15c shoes: 2009 Yellow NB 840s

WP sprint course. Apparently didn't get the FR turned off at the end. Moving ok. Ran well enough, but blew by #2 and lost 2 minutes by the time I got back to it. Otherwise perfectly satisfactory.

Note

Dog walk this morning. Sassy had a pretty fine discovery, and has been walking around most of the day with the deer skull she found. Getting a good chew out of it, and always happy to have something in her mouth. Looks pretty strange.

Needed to post something to record the low point of my G in the last year or so..

Running (woods run) 28:27 intensity: (4 @0) + (1:00 @1) + (6:13 @2) + (16:25 @3) + (4:42 @4) + (3 @5) 3.0 km (9:29 / km)
ahr:137 max:168 shoes: 2010 NB MT840

Testing Sprint 1 course, and mightily disappointed in 305, which apparently had not picked up satellites. So distance is a guess. Nominal OCAD distance 2.4 k

Running (woods run) 25:20 intensity: (15 @1) + (1:55 @2) + (14:02 @3) + (9:08 @4) 2.88 km (8:47 / km) +53m 8:03 / km

Did sprint 1 again, this time with satellite coverage. A little faster, a few more scrapes on the shins.
5 PM

Running (woods run) 24:05 intensity: (4 @0) + (25 @1) + (4:38 @2) + (13:16 @3) + (5:42 @4) 2.9 km (8:17 / km) +60m 7:31 / km
ahr:137 max:161 shoes: 2010 NB MT840

Test of sprint 2, including a little time deciding between two locations. Took the more accessible one.

Note

Rhonda has been running the Earth week field trips for the local elementary school since about 1998. She has a different grade going to a different place each day this week. Today we had 150 3rd graders here at Ratlum. Rhonda put together a very nice program. There were four main presenters. We had a raptor rehabilitator who brought four of her live birds and a bunch of other artifacts. She had a red-tail, a great horned owl a kestrel and another one I missed because I was shuttling speakers around. I did a presentation on the electric fence and the new forest growing inside, and on the bears who were born here four years ago. Then off to the Big Down Marsh, where local naturalist Jay Kaplan talked about the bird life there. He is so good: he found a hooded merganser nesting in a cavity in a dead tree, a hairy woodpecker nesting in another one, and a phoebe with a nest under the bridge. Also, there are four heron nests this year. There were 18 three years ago, but the snags they use are falling fast. Then on to the little pond, where another naturalist had collected salamander eggs and other pond life for display. Back up to the field where they had lunch, swung on the tire swing (thanks, J-J) and played rudimentary soccer. A very nice day. Pretty tired at the end of it, and glad that Chris was not able to go to Forest Park for the 5K. So I didn't go either.
