cycling 39:00 [1] 8.8 mi (4:26 / mi)

Pleasant Valley loop with Zack. He was rather enthusiastic for the first few miles, but got bored and we slowed down and cut it short. Too bad. Great day for a ride.

Orienteering 1:01:00 [2]

Green course from the snow meet at Sessions last December. Would have been easier with streamers! Visibility not great, footing tricky because of thigh high ferns over most of the course. Missed the first couple, and very slow otherwise. Cut off after #8 and went directly to #12 and in. Logged area in the center that has been progressing from rough open to green is pretty darn green now. Most prominent species is chestnut saplings. Ended up going around it, mostly, whereas going through was a reasonable route last winter.

Excursion down in Pleasant Valley with Rhonda. Pretty flat, felt good.

cycling 53:31 [3] 13.45 mi (3:59 / mi)

Very nice activity for recovery from rogaining! Felt really quite good, riding on the flats (mostly) down in Pleasant Valley and Riverton.

Rhonda's evening class. Exposed the tight and sore spots from the rogaine.

Orienteering race (rogaine) 9:13:18 [2] 24.0 km (23:03 / km)

Balance of the rogaine. We had resolved to spend the night out, and at midnight were pretty far from the HH, so just trudged on. However, a bit of real food would have helped, as none of the candy, gorp, sports drink, etc tasted any good any more. Then we had an hour wasted searching for a veg boundary in the dark in a place where the map was not very good. That started the rapid decline. We cut the rest of the course short, and spent more time resting. Only 490 points in the last 9 hours, for a total of 1,660. Inventory of physical reactions: sore feet, but not unreasonably so; no blisters; sore hamstrings but no unreasonable cramping; sore ankles, sore R knee. Stiffness in lower back and neck, primarily related to pack carrying. Nothing likely to be long lasting. The night time route involved a lot of pack drops, both to conserve energy and to pick safe routes. The trade-off was extra distance. The route: 308,309,607,311(misplaced and never found it, but received credit for being at the right place), 705, 508, 312, 805, 509, 706, 409, 608, 410, 507, 806, 413, 609, 704, 412, (dark) 803, 504, 605, 307, 703, 406, 804 (only major error), 506, (dawn) 604, 606, 602, 402, HH.

Orienteering 13:00:00 [2] 45.0 km (17:20 / km)

First 13 hours of Allegany SP Rogaine, with J-J. Generally pretty satisfactory, and 1,170 pts to that point. Had cleaned up the western side and started on the southern. One particularly discouraging trudge down a stream bed in the dark, including much tripping over deadfall and losing a shoe in the muck, but seeing just the tip of it and being able to fish it out. Very compatible in terms of fitness and energy (and otherwise as well). Knee hurt almost immediately, and throughout. About 5 hours in started having trouble with hamstring cramps, but they went away after about an hour, and weren't a problem again.
