7 AM

Gym 1:00:00 [3]
slept:5.0 weight:167lbs

In the gym with Eric. Usual stuff.
2 PM

Rowing Machine 4:52 [3] 1.0 km (4:52 / km)

This didn’t go so well. Pace was slow, and I didn’t have the oomph to go any faster, and then my elbow started to get more irritated, so I just stopped at 1k instead of continuing on to 2. I tried underhanded grip for a while, which was a small improvement, but not enough to risk it.

ahr:146 max:154 slept:7.0 weight:165.6lbs shoes: 2014 gel kayano

Well, this will be a long road back, if I ever get back any further than I am. Rhonda and I went over to do 5K at the river. Working hard the whole way, not going very fast.
12 PM

Note

Had a report from Zack, who seems to be having quite a fine time, applying for jobs, checking out his surroundings. He bought a bike on craigslist today, walked 7 miles over to the environs of Annadel to pick it up and rode it home. Yesterday he had done some tramping around in Annadel and found it quite fine. One of my favorite places, too, although I haven't been in a couple of years.
4 PM

Rowing Machine 8:53 [3] 2.0 km (4:27 / km)

This all seems harder than it did a few months ago. Of course, doing it more often would help.

Tuesday Jan 9, 2018 #

6 AM

Gym 1:00:00 [1]
slept:6.75 weight:166.4lbs

In the gym with Eric, rolling stretching, core, deadlifts, goblet squats, some band stretching focusing on the upper back, etc. The usual kind of workout.
8 AM

Note

A trip to the transfer station with the detritus from the older kids' mom, those things that they didn't want.
1 PM

Snowshoe 55:00 [1] 2.75 km (20:00 / km)

dog loop plus an excursion out on the Big Down Marsh, which we cut short when we started punching through to wet snow and then to water. Surprising that it would seem so melted after just one warmish (maybe low 30s, maybe less) day. I guess it just wasn't cold enough underneath to discourage the general melting of things. Otherwise pleasant to be out and the rest of the snow is still fine.
4 PM

Rowing Machine 8:55 [3] 2.0 km (4:28 / km)

Snowshoe 30:00 [3] 2.0 km (15:00 / km)
slept:8.25 weight:166.6lbs

Dog loop with Sassy, mostly. She seems a lot more comfortable ranging far and wide in the snow. Nice afternoon, just starting to spit a little. A fairly brisk pace, noticed it on the uphills, particularly where untracked.

Snowshoe 52:35 intensity: (5:23 @0) + (36:15 @1) + (10:57 @2) 1.3 mi (40:28 / mi) +72m 34:32 / mi
ahr:99 max:121 slept:6.75 weight:167.8lbs

Snowshoeing with Rhonda, Francesca and Sassy. The track is from the second half of the excursion, because I forgot to turn it on. Sassy found something really interesting and disappeared for about 15 minutes. We put a lot of effort into looking for her, but as usual, the best plan was just to head home and eventually she showed up. Good Zack wasn't here to see us lose our dog, even if temporarily.

Beautiful sunny day, great snow.

Saturday Jan 6, 2018 #

Note
slept:7.0 weight:167.8lbs

Big family day. One of those rare occasions when all our children and all our grandchildren were in attendance, along with Matthew and family in the morning and Francesca and family in the evening. Very nice, but tiring and certainly no time for any organized exercise.

The end of an era, as Zack leaves for California tomorrow. He will live with Kathy for the time being, search for work in Santa Rosa, see what happens.

Snowshoe 45:20 intensity: (2:50 @0) + (24:36 @1) + (17:54 @2) 1.05 mi (43:01 / mi) +67m 35:55 / mi
ahr:107 max:124 slept:6.5 weight:168.8lbs

Short excursion with Zack and Sassy. Nice snow. I would say the final total was about 14", and very nice quality stuff.
4 PM

Note

Tried to row, but wasn’t feeling it. Made it to about 400 m, and then just stopped. R quad is pretty sore, and also feeling the effects of the grandchildren.

Thursday Jan 4, 2018 #

3 PM

Rowing Machine 13:28 [3] 3.0 km (4:29 / km)
slept:7.5 weight:168.4lbs

In between bouts of snow shoveling and dog walking in the snow. Seems like about a foot right now.

Snowshoe 50:00 [3] 1.5 km (33:20 / km)

Very pleasant excursion with Zack, crashing around through laurel thickets and marshes, just exploring, finding a few hills to glide down. New snowshoe bindings, as I got the snowshoes repaired this off season. A Garmin track would have been interesting, nothing like a straight line, and not much on trail.

Gym 45:00 [1]

Rhonda's morning class, followed by a little coffee get-together to visit with Sheryl, in town for a few days. Well attended.

With Zack at Butternut. Pretty darned cold, but excellent conditions otherwise and virtually no one at the mountain. Most of the time you couldn't see anyone else on a run, ski right on the lifts and plenty of empty chairs in front, as far as you could see. Only did 5 runs, as the old man was getting way too cold. Only went on the easternmost runs, as they were making snow on the western side.

Even funnier looking on Relive.

Hike 30:00 [0] 2.0 km (15:00 / km)
slept:7.5 weight:165.4lbs shoes: 2011 icebugs

dog loop with Rhonda and Sassy. Well dressed, definitely not so bad for walking in the woods.

Zack and I had had something of a plan to go skiing at Butternut today, but we went out and stomped around a bit at 6:45 and concluded it was maybe too cold and windy to be all that much fun. Of course, once one decides that maybe one is going to blow it off, then whatever weather is out there is merely a confirmation. I wasn't disappointed to stay home, but once Zack asked if I wanted to go check the temperature to decide if we were going, I figured that was the death knell for the trip. And so it was, and Zack went back to bed until about 11.
1 PM

Rowing Machine 23:12 [3] 5.0 km (4:38 / km)

R quad and ITB are pretty sore today, so that was something of a limiting factor. Not sure why. It is a pretty chronic condition, but sometimes worse than others and today was on the "worse" side.

Rowing Machine 13:48 [3] 3.0 km (4:36 / km)
slept:5.75 weight:167.2lbs

I was planning to do this all day, but kept getting diverted by one or the other of the housemates, so just got it in before company arrives. Always something here. Isabel was here the last few days, wonderful company, and easy enough that it is not like company, really. This evening yoga girls and husbands are arriving, including Sheryl and Matt and kids, back from Italy for a few weeks to visit family (and us).

Slow cadence, 21 over all, 20 the last half.

ahr:127 max:145 slept:7.5 weight:168lbs shoes: 2011 icebugs

1 dog loop, in the snow. Pretty cold. Thermometer said zero, but don't think it was quite that cold. Watch died part way around, so an estimate

Gym 1:00:00 [3]
slept:8.5 weight:167.6lbs

In the gym with Eric. Usual stuff, deadlifts with 120# goblet squats with 35#, dumbbell rows with 35#, stretching, rolling, core.
11 AM

Hike 30:00 [0] 2.0 km (15:00 / km)
shoes: 2011 icebugs

dog loop with Zack and Sassy. Plenty cold, but otherwise pleasant. Snow was cold and dry enough that I could just wear the icebugs and not get wet feet.

Pleasant ride with PG from Pleasant Valley, out and back along the river and out to Rte 8. A little colder than I had expected to be, with my winter gear that Rhonda had bought a few years ago when she thought we were going to be doing winter riding. A few damp spots, some ice along the sides of the road, but not impeding our progress. Just a very nice outing.

Rowing Machine 13:36 [3] 3.0 km (4:32 / km)

First time in a while. A little hard. Did five 10-stroke pickups, last one at 1:48-1:50. Got my attention.

Seemed like kind of a busy day. Worked on the spreader some, identified its problem, a broken belt tensioning spring. Now I need to get one, so perhaps a few more days to deal with that. Moved the woodchips pile, although Zack did most of the work. Can't spread it now, and didn't want it to take root where it was on the side of the driveway.

Jess, Jonathan and Cooper arrived, and we set Jonathan up for his hunting adventure tomorrow. We went out with our neighbor Joey who hunts on our property, and saw where he has tree stands, got Jonathan the instructions he needs. Mostly, don't end up like these guys.

And between a lot of wood chips shoveling and walking out to the far end of the property to look at tree stands, I was pretty tired by the end of the day.
