Watching a black squirrel and a gray squirrel chasing each other up and down a maple tree, tussling like a pair of kittens, more or less along the county line in front of the window at my desk. Generally speaking, the black squirrels at Ratlum stay in Litchfield county, while the gray squirrels prefer Hartford County. This is a long standing arrangement.

Seasonal PR: 2:09.5; 2:08.6; 2:05.6; 2:02.7.

Not exactly gasping at the finish, but maybe one level below. Certainly breathing hard. It will take a lot of practice to bring this time down, and probably some cooler weather.

So far I have 25,000 meters in July. Looked back over the Concept 2 log and in the prior 10 years my total for July was 14,000. So something new,.

Note

Yard work trifecta today (again). 2 hours in the garden this morning, weeding, tying up tomatoes, raking. An hour or so in the afternoon of TSI (timber stand improvement), cutting out conflicting trees, favoring oaks and birches over the ubiquitous pin cherries, cutting out any aspens we find. There is a lot to do. Then about 2 1/2 hours of laurel wrangling. Pushed another path out of the thicket in the center to drag the laurel out, so now we are getting to where there are some islands of laurel that I can try to wipe out, one by one.Between the TSI and the laurel wrangling, and generally just growing, the clear cut is now relatively easy to walk through, and getting better fast. Still a little dark green to deal with, certainly some lesser green, but trending toward white woods.

Down in the clear cut with Zack, doing a little TSI (timber stand improvement), pruning off splits in trees, obnoxious low branches, thinning out sprout groups, saving some for firewood, the rest in the chipping piles. Until we got chased in by the thunderstorm.

Today I was planning to get out early and go orienteering at Tarrywile, but didn't feel the enthusiasm for the drive when I got up, so several hours in the garden instead, and then this walk with Rhonda while we were in between steps in baking some bread.

Had to make myself do this, after several hours in the garden and two with Zack and his new chainsaw doing some timber stand improvement down in the clearcut, thinning out some clumps of maples, pruning some Vs in birches, cherries and maples, making some firewood out of anything bigger than about 2 1/2", putting the rest in the chipping pile, which is getting really big again.

I’ve been reflecting on the life and times of my old friend and roommate Michael Proctor. I got a call last night from his ex-girl friend, who told me he died two weeks ago. She has been persona non grata to his wife, but apparently stays in touch with his children. I hadn’t been in touch with him in about ten years, couldn’t seem to contact him by any of the conventional means. Turns out he had been suffering from dementia all that time, and closely guarded by the wife. I last saw him in St Petersburg Beach in about 2009, but over the years we had a lot of adventures together, including a bunch of bare boat charter sailing trips in Hawaii and the Caribbean. Lots of memories.

Painting lawn chairs. Not entirely sure this was a good idea. Three elderly adirondack chairs on the deck. Power washed them a few days ago, primed them Wednesday, first and second coat on the top side Thursday. Rain yesterday so nothing. Painted the bottom sides this morning. They look very nice, but way too much work.

An hour and a half laurel wrangling down in the clear cut, where it is much cooler than our in the open. Cool enough that heat was not really an impediment. What was an impediment was a yellow jacket sting in my knee, and a bunch of those guys buzzing around looking for somebody to blame for their problems. That seemed like a good time to leave the area for the day.
