Mountain bike 22:35 [2] 5.62 km (14.9 kph)
shoes: Giant XTC Advanced SL 29er

A ride with the lads before our nav exercises.

Orienteering (MTB) 19:32 [2] ***** 4.67 km (14.3 kph)
shoes: Giant XTC Advanced SL 29er

Some complex map reading work on the trails out the back of our accommodation, looking for paper towels wrapped around trees. No-one was particularly great out there - some worse than others - and I got through it okay but slow as per usual on a complex map.

I think very good map memory would be a great skill to have on a map like this because my inability to read the map whilst on single track means I have to stop at a lot of junctions to see what I need to do next.

Mountain bike 4:51 [2] 1.4 km (17.3 kph)
shoes: Giant XTC Advanced SL 29er

Ride back to accomms with Ian and Carolyn whilst the other lads went out for a spin around the trails.

More trail riding, this time with Boltboi, Tom and Angus. Spent a fair bit of that time looking at a ski jump that looked in a state of disrepair. Seat post is not staying up which sucks.

Orienteering (MTB) race (Pirata) 53:50 [3] ***** 10.64 km (11.9 kph)

Local club event today where Australians made up 1/3 of the field! We knew beforehand it was 10.5km and with 34 controls it was going to be constant nav and concentration required. Double sided 1:5000 map I also assumed we'd be going back through the same area but turns out after we finished one side, we crossed the river and went over.

Started off cautiously as I was the third last starter so went the long way to the first one just to be safe. Track network looked complex and I ended up coming in from the far side of a lot of controls since I overshot the tracks I was looking for but always knew pretty quickly what I'd done. Got passed by the two guys behind me pretty early on but pretty sure all the locals knew the area pretty well.

Got to the map turnover on the bridge expecting to go back and do it all again but we went over the bridge and the map on the far side was insane! I was very cautious through here and had a lot of hesitations but thankfully never got lost so was just slow. It was hard to get up any pace at any time and I stopped at a lot of junctions to check where I was.

In the end the Aussies didn't fare so well although Carolyn won the women's division (with three riders) and was second in the series of four races having only competed in just the one but the senior men got hammered, taking out the spots 8-11 out of 11 finishers with one mp on top of that. I got 10th, just a minute behind Alex and a further 30 seconds to Chris. Heaps of fun though! Also good that you can cut through the bush here ;-)

Mountain bike 1:10:00 [2]
shoes: Giant XTC Advanced SL 29er

Ride around the trails of Tallinn with Karl & Callum. The trails are right behind our accommodation and there are stacks! There's also a permanent O course out there and it'd be a pretty insane sprint map. Shame we won't be riding an actual course out there but I'm sure the terrain will be replicated elsewhere.

Didn't learn from last year's plane trip over where I ended up with a slightly bent derailleur hanger and disc brake. This year the hanger was bent beyond recognition but at least both discs were fine. No other problems that I've found (so far).

Road bike (commute) 1:11:23 [1] 29.15 km (24.5 kph)
shoes: Giant TCR

Left home late because a heavy rain shower came through as I was about to leave so I waited for it to stop and then decided to put the pack cover on for the first time ever and regretted it all the way since it is not shaped for my commute bag.

Awful headwind made for a long ride.
5 PM

Road bike (commute) 8:00 [2] 2.8 km (21.0 kph)

Ride over to Tash's place to pay her dad a dowry.

HT to work via a lap of Herdsman Lake, on the path most of the way until it got too limestoney.
5 PM

Road bike 57:15 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (32:15 @3) + (15:00 @4) 29.2 km (30.6 kph)

KP Rd was a bit congested today so it took me a while to get through it. Picked up a tail just off the Narrows and made sure he worked hard all the way to Mt Henry, where he finally fell off.

Figured I might make >30kph for the homeward trip so kept up the pace although was made difficult at one roundabout when a motorist went through from my right but must have decided I had a death wish and was going to crank through in front so the motorist sat there, I sat there and eventually he or she must have seen that by now I was visibly upset with him or her so finally moved on.

Made it to home bang on 30kph only to realise that I'd lost satellites through Mt Henry so my distance had been cut short by 60m anyway, which made it easier to get over.

Windtrainer 1:10:20 intensity: (36:40 @1) + (23:00 @3) + (10:40 @5)
shoes: Giant TCR

Last week's Monday's session all over again! In fact I will just copy and paste and change the relevant bits.

10 min warm up
SCR pyramid
5 x 60s builds with 60s recoveries
2 x 8 x 40/20s with 5 min recoveries
SLC x 8

That's now it for training sessions pre-WC. It also means I've had more hours on the windtrainer this year already than in either of the previous two years and still have >1/3 of the year to go. I have also been sick 100% less than every other year.
