Hiking 3:03:37 [2] 9.8 km (3.2 kph) +141m
shoes: Boreal Zanskar Boots

A cold front had moved through overnight so conditions were quite moody this morning. We were also low on water (the last stream we had found was at lunch the day before), so we skipped breakfast and pushed on to the end of the hike at Suikerbossie Guest Farm. More maze navigation but then an easy path down meant we were done just after 9am.

It was an incredible experience to traverse this entire range - I got to see many places I hadn't explored before and it was great to go back to my long-distance hiking roots :) 129km over 8 days in total.

Long session at CityRock Cape Town with Fran, Jo, Rich & Tanya. Some fun routes but grades definitely soft here!

Hiking (Cederberg Traverse Day 7) 5:41:36 [2] 14.8 km (2.6 kph) +676m
shoes: Boreal Zanskar Boots

This was probably my favourite day of the hike. No paths, but much easier terrain than my bundu-bashing experience earlier in the hike. We were pretty much walking through terraced fields the entire day, surrounded by rock buttresses and pinnacles in a very wild & remote part of the Cederberg. Navigation was fun as we would have to find our way from terrace to terrace through a tricky maze of passages and boulders - somehow there was always a sneaky way through though :) We made better progress than expected and slept in a cave at the Sandfontein Arch that night. What a place!

Hiking (Cederberg Traverse Day 6) 5:37:10 [2] 17.1 km (3.0 kph) +998m

4 of our group wanted to summit Sneeuberg which Fran & I had done before so the rest of us took the opportunity for a nice lazy morning before meeting up with everyone else again at the Maltese Cross.

This is where Tanya and I left the rest of the group to continue our traverse to the south, with lunch at the Disa Pool and then leaving the trails for good on our climb up to Luna & Apollo Peaks. Plenty of exploring that afternoon trying to find a way through the maze of passages and ledges up to the Luna Peak summit. I eventually solo climbed a 15m grade 12 chimney to get to the top, only to find a trail of cairns going down a nice easy walking route on the other side ;)

Hiking (Cederberg Traverse Day 5) 5:06:49 [2] 20.0 km (3.9 kph) +1150m
shoes: Boreal Zanskar Boots

Fran and a whole bunch of friends joined me for the weekend from Cape Town, so there were 9 of us in total on this stretch. Rupert & I started early to walk the 7km of river trails to the Uitkyk Pass trailhead, where everybody else got a lift to along the road.

A really cool day with amazing views through the Duiwelsgat valley, ending at Sneeuberg Hut with a gorgeous final section in the late afternoon light :)

Knew it was going to be cooking today so started early and didn't waste any time marching around to Algeria. Super-hot by 9am already, so it was more-or-less a head down slog to the shade and pools at Algeria campsite, which I reached in 35 degree heat at noon.

The other campers and staff there were the first people I had seen in 4 days!

Hiking (Cederberg Traverse Day 3) 6:24:05 [2] 17.6 km (2.7 kph) +522m
shoes: Boreal Zanskar Boots

Started out early with 2 hours of exploring the passages and scrambles of the Groot Krakadouw summit plateau - such a wild crazy place - lile some kind of giant rock maze :)

Religiously stuck to paths on this day after my experience the day before, which involved quite a long detour around, but I wasn't complaining! Some nice variety spending some time in the foothills as well. Got pretty hot in the middle of the day so hid in the shade under a boulder for 2 hours before doing the last climb over the Groot Koupoort and finding a tiny bivvy spot next to a river at the end of the day.

Hiking (Cederberg Traverse Day 2) 7:19:56 [2] 13.7 km (1.9 kph) +1740m
shoes: Boreal Zanskar Boots

From the top of the Krakadouw Pass, 5km into the day, I left the path and started battling the fynbos! I traversed the 3 Krakadouw summits, which have some spectacular cliffs and rock formations but the bundu-bashing really took it out of me. Lots of scrambling over big boulders and constantly fighting burnt protea bushes and the like. Took me 9 hours to cover those 8km and I was a broken man at the end of the day.

Ended the day on the Groot Krakadouw summit plateau, sleeping under the stars surrounded by towering rock pillars. A mouse ate my scourer overnight haha :)

Hiking (Cederberg Traverse Day 1 ) 4:38:03 [2] 17.5 km (3.8 kph) +562m
shoes: Boreal Zanskar Boots

My folks dropped me off at Pakhuis Pass on the northern end of the Cederberg and then it was just me and the mountains :) Fairly cool conditions with the tail-end of a cold front coming through. I stuck to the paths all day and made camp at the base of the Krakadouw Pass. Getting used to carrying a heavy load again... knees took quite a bit of strain throughout this trip.
