orienteering race (QB3) 33:30 [4] *** 2.15 km (15:35 / km) +30m 14:34 / km
shoes: armcrutches

QB3 day 3 - M55AS Hard3 - nominal 2.0km - (sprint) at CHEC

worked hard today and pleased with result - kept map contact and read all the levels right - not quite maximum effort because there were some potentially slippery areas, which I became aware of in the first 20 seconds, so made sure of footing and placement of crutches rather than actually trying to fly.
tried to avoid stairs as much as possible, so first unavoidable stairs were not till 8-9; took option of stairs 10-11, and no choice for stairs up to last control ( told Bruce I was not happy about that when I saw him later!)

Routegadget fairly heavily editted because of poor tracking around buildings

Finally got to the Deep Sea Fishing Club for lunch-time fish'n'chips just before the lunch session closed (bringing back memories of our eating timing from 3 months in Europe) - and they gave us the members' price when we mentioned "orienteering"

orienteering race (QB3) 2:03:00 [4] *** 5.2 km (23:39 / km) +80m 21:58 / km

QB3 Day 2 - M55AS Hard 7 (nom 4.0km) long distance 0n "Oppy's Gully" at Bom Bom State Forest near Grafton

had spent so much time looking the map before today, from earlier version I tidied up for BnB, and then preparing the LIDAR data for the basemap for RobV, and then cleaning up the final 15k file - but only actual exposure to area had been from the highway while driving past 3 years ago.

My impression from the drive in to the assembly, and from the first 3 controls, was that there was little grass or significant tree-fall on the ground - this influenced my decision for the 1.4km long leg 3-4 where I planned to stay a bit lower to the left of straight line and avoid the wattle regrowth shown as green stripe. However the white areas on the map on the chosen route were covered in knee-high grass which was thick enough to impede the crutches, and also obscure any
irregularities. So this leg became 45 min of very hard work. I hadn't considered the track options to the right of straight because that involved a bit more climb and slightly more distance- if given a second chance I would definitely take the track option.

warm up/down 20:00 [1] 0.6 km (33:20 / km)

testing trekking poles on loose and compacted sand, and then walk to start
2 PM

orienteering race (QB3) 1:42:32 [4] **** 3.17 km (32:21 / km) +30m 30:53 / km
shoes: HH2+poles

first SL since the NSW Champs in 2014 - back in the big time, so I took a BIG TIME!

M55AS - Course 4 nominal 2.2km
competing on this map very pleasing for me, as it was a possible major event area I identified during mapping for Coffs come-and-try-it in 2013, which lead to formation of Bush'n'Beach - also interesting to see how Alex used the basemap info I extracted from LIDAR, and turned it into a real O-map

reasonably happy with #1 & #2, took long track option for #2

bit casual going to #3 - knew I was on the ridge line E of the railway, but not sure where - remembered enough of the area from 3 years ago to know that any further towards the railway was not on, but there was enough lawyer vine on the ground to make progress along the ridge line painfully slow

took the track option toward #4, picked the right attack point off the track, slight misread of the depressions and drifted too far north - after I left #4 I recognised the spot where I started the drift and wasted about 5 min

remainder of course steadier - minor wobble at #11 when tempted by nearby control that I knew wasn't mine, but wanted to check feature - minor quibble about lack of contour tag, or exact control placement, but no time lost from that

walking (touristy) 1:00:00 [1] 2.0 km (30:00 / km)

"tour des moles" at Coffs Harbour with tinytoes
- northern breakwater closed because of planned and unplanned repair work, so no walk to Muttonbird Island - notice on the marina put up in May saying that access would be closed on 6 June: someone has a very good crystal ball!
- southern breakwater open for the first time since I started coming to Coffs in 2012, so took the opportunity to walk out to the end, and a few photos of the repetitive patterns of the cyclopean concrete blocks on the seaward side.

back to near this area tomorrow for the Boambee Dunes middle distance for QB3.
