Biking-Mountain 2:00:00 [3]

Biked the perimeter of Pawtuckaway SP on roads and trails. Awesome. Always wondered what was out there beyond the O map.

KH, PW and I dropped off the car at the Fundy Cove boat launch and rode the road NW to the Round Pond boat launch where we picked up the trail that led around the pond and over to South Mountain. We stopped to check out the old Goodrich Family cemetery and ruins, then continued on. The late summer/early fall feel of the park was great. Low humidity, warm and pleasant day. Ended up taking Mountain Trail south to the Park road near the Neal's cove group camping (where we usually camp), then followed the road to the Fundy Trail which we took back north to the boat launch and the cars. Ten miles on my odometer. Furthest I've ever mountain biked. Some of the washed out trails and roads scared me, but I remained unscathed, mostly.

Loved seeing the NW part of the park and learning that North, Middle, and South Mountians are an old volcano. This can be seen quite conspicuously on the USGS quad which PW and MH had on the wall of their cottage (actually, they had it and the 3 adjacent quads posted).

Had a wonderful day with the girls and a pleasant afternoon on the dock with a beer and a lovely evening listening to loons on the lake.

Orienteering race (Brown course) 1:04:00 [4]

Guessing my time. Not such a good race today. Four errors inside the control circle. Arghhh. Figured each one out though. Loved Peter's control location on a boulder in the Burnham's Marsh--just a few meters off shore, so just got my feet a little damp on the sphagnum moss I walked on to reach it. I found myself in a sea of golden moss, blueberry bushes, and bog cotton. Wonderful. Made up for my screwing up on the course. Still had fun.

Left there and joined KH at the Pawtuckaway Lake cottage of PW and MH. Spent a wonderful few days there.

Orienteering (Brown course) 59:00 [4]

Approx. time. Pawtuckaway Family Camping Weekend. Best-ever navigation here. No mistakes. Wow. Slow though, but very careful and it paid off. Gorgeous day.

Enjoyed the Canoe-O with Kathy using Rhonda and Charlie's kayaks. We skipped the punching part, just tagged the controls and went on. Found an awesome freshwater sponge in the small channel between the east shore of Horse Island and the small island (with a control on the knoll) about 50 m east of it. The oddity was the size of a cantaloupe and looked, at first, like a ball of frog eggs, but not quite. We doubled back and took a closer look at it. It was attached to an emergent stick and there were two smaller ones next to it. Kathy poked it with a stick and discovered that it was not soft and gelatinous like an egg mass would have been. It had a repeating pattern of irregular pentagons, hexagons, whatever, and a quarter-sized hole at one end. Somehow, "freshwater sponge" popped into my head. Never have seen one, but know they exist. Later we googled it and found a photo that looked exactly like it. Way cool.

Vampire O later: played good vampire with KH. Always fun.

Love, love, love Pawtuckaway weekend.
