Quarienteering #11 - Queen's Park
I have found while using the map run F that it often punches many metres away and this makes me lazy about orienteering precisely in the control circle. Today, I decided to tighten up the GPS punching settings on my phone before I started. This was a mistake, since several controls including the finish never punched and others I had to spend significant time standing around at (phone raised to the GPS gods praying for their mercy). It was pretty frustrating and definitely chopped up the run. I also made a couple of direction errors because I was running with the phone and no compass. I am definitely leaning towards always printing the paper map and using the app for the satisfying beeps (but not actually paying that much attention to them). It was a very lovely evening to be out. I know the park portion of the map very well, but I haven't actually orienteered much in the residential area below the road so it was fun to be in an area I wasn't so familiar with. If I had known that my dad's courses were going to take me into the bushes and the mud, I might have brought a change of clothes. Not so comfy to hang out in squishy shoes after.

Orienteering 44:00 [3]

Quarienteering #10
Once upon a time my practicum at my school in Vancouver was supposed to be followed up by a 3 week community field experience. For me that meant spending those 3 weeks in a rural K-10 school with 40 students in Alexis Creek (about a 100 km west of Williams Lake). Obviously, all of the community field experiences were cancelled this year and UBC had to scramble to find an activity that it could claim as equivalent to the Ministry of Education and the Teacher Regulation Branch. We were told that we needed to produce an educational gift to our practicum school or our community (whatever that means). Not surprisingly, I decided to make a map of the school and the surrounding neighbourhood and then plan a bunch of courses that teachers can use with their classes. I decided to upload one of those courses to MapRunF and test run it today (with my parents as additional guinea pigs). It was surprisingly fun even though it was quite simple. Nice to be out on a new map even if I made it and planned the course :)
