Windtrainer 22:15 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (5:00 @2) + (5:00 @3) + (5:00 @4) + (2:15 @5)
slept:7.0

Last VO2max test. The result was about the same as last time, I guess unsurprisingly. Nice quick way to get the heart going in the morning but did I really need to at 6.30am on my day off?

MTBO race (Long distance champs) 1:31:26 [4] 27.3 km (3:21 / km)
shoes: Yeti ASR

Today was even better- great course (thanks Juffy!) with heaps of route choice and complicated decisions to make. Duncan put the pressure on by sitting carefully two minutes behind me the whole way.
Unfortunately the field was not huge (because the other competitor didn't finish) so my championship win was not all that satisfying. I rode solidly though, and was happy with my nav, and unlike the day before I took some splits from Duncan!

MTBO race (Middle distance champs) 32:06 [4] 11.0 km (2:55 / km)
shoes: Yeti ASR

According to the splits I took 8 hours to do this, but actually I did not. I really enjoyed the ride, after a busy morning and a long drive and arriving with no time to spare. Wished it was longer- the map was nice, and apparently there was a view, although I was too busy trying not to make mistakes to really notice it. I didn't always pick the best route choices, but I executed them well so I am happy.

MTB 30:00 [2]

Control collecting and riding out to the day 2 start for camping and quiz night adventures.

Windtrainer 1:12:00 intensity: (48:00 @2) + (24:00 @5)
slept:8.0

Last single leg session.
This time I really, really pushed. I held over 200W on my right leg for a minute at one point, and averaged over 180.
Then I swapped to the left leg and had absolutely embarrassingly nothing. Nothing at all. Barely held 170W and couldn't walk afterwards.
Crazy.

It was so much better than Wed though, almost like the 12km of running on Tues night made my legs tired.

Run intervals 30:00 [3]
shoes: Metallic blue Asics

Still no watch. I got there late, did a warmup and a cooldown plus part of the session.
600/200 x2
400/200 x2
Legs felt empty but I moved not too horribly in the end, especially with all those people chasing me. John brought yet another two new girls along.

Note
slept:7.0 (rest day)

In a fit of motivation this morning I decided to study rather than ride my bike. Then John woke up and took me and the dog for a walk instead, which was more fun than studying but perhaps not as useful as riding.
Another beautiful day.

Wednesday Oct 21, 2009 #

Windtrainer 1:12:00 intensity: (48:00 @2) + (24:00 @5)
slept:8.0

More single-legged stuff. I am definitely getting more coordinated. Legs pretty heavy today after yesterday's run - especially the first interval on each side.

Run 30:00 [2]
shoes: Feet

Run/walk/scramble and general potter up the beach from Ocean Reef since I had some time to kill. I found some big scuttling crabs, and some pretty shells and also a whole bag of rice. Gorgeous sunny day and I even had a little swim! This full time job thing is such hard work, glad I'm going part time next year.

Run (dog jog) 15:00 [2]

Cos I promised.

Roadie intervals 1:06:00 intensity: (12:00 @2) + (30:00 @3) + (24:00 @5) 28.0 km (2:21 / km)
slept:7.5 shoes: Shiny carbon pro lite

Tuesday is intervals day along Challenger - there were two pairs of bikes, a huge bunch from Cycles Bespoke and at least a couple of other friendless types riding up and down doing the same thing as me. Not surprisingly, since it was a beautiful morning, and just enough wind to keep me honest (half the time).
Warmup/cooldown to Scarborough and back.
2min on/1min off from the end of the service road to the end of challenger, repeated about a million times. Probably more.

Run intervals 1:10:00 intensity: (15:00 @3) + (55:00 @4) 12.0 km (5:50 / km)
shoes: Metallic blue Asics

I forgot my watch and was therefore not accountable in this session - except that John brought all these girls along who are slower than me but not enough that I can totally slack off.
Actually planned to shorten the session but I felt pretty good once I started and was quite enjoying it. Weird.

Terrain loops x 5 - double double single with about 3 min recovery

Monday Oct 19, 2009 #

Windtrainer 1:12:00 intensity: (48:00 @2) + (24:00 @5)
slept:6.0

More single-legged stuff, except that this time it felt much harder, especially on the left leg which went second.

Sunday Oct 18, 2009 #

Roadie 2:15:00 [3] 56.0 km (2:25 / km)
shoes: Shiny carbon pro lite

Not sure on time/distance yet.
Fun ride on a perfect sunny day from Dalto's place up Tonkin hwy - Armadale - Albany hwy - canning dam -brookton and back.
Nice rideable pace, especially given the huge tailwind pushing us up the main climb. It felt far too short in the end, but Dalto cooked us a great bbq lunch after so I wasn't tempted to ride home!

Saturday Oct 17, 2009 #

Note
slept:9.0 (rest day)

Not sick any more, I even ate breakfast! But I will have a rest day just to be sure. I am going to spend half of it at work, seeing what feral germs the northern suburbs people can throw at me next.

Squash 1:00:00 [3] 42.0 km (1:26 / km)
shoes: Metallic blue Asics

Another long run courtesy of John's Dad, who was so patronising today that I ran front right to back left and back so many times in a row that I ended up laughing too much to hit the ball. He let me nearly win a game once- but just at the last minute I got distracted by a heckler and John's dad showed that he had been in control all along. Sigh...
I won a few points against John too, but that is less satisfying since I KNOW it is only due to his sore foot.

Friday Oct 16, 2009 #

Note
slept:12.0 (sick)

Still pretty seedy but infinitely better than yesterday!

Wednesday Oct 14, 2009 #

Windtrainer 1:12:00 intensity: (48:00 @2) + (24:00 @5)
slept:7.0

More single-legged stuff. My legs are still a bit tired so I wasn't able to push hard enough to even raise a sweat, until the last interval when I gave it everything I had left. Feel a bit wobbly now, but only on the right.

Roadie 1:10:00 intensity: (42:00 @2) + (28:00 @4)
shoes: Shiny carbon pro lite

Rode into work for a tutorial. I enjoyed my ride up the freeway north bike path and back. On the way there I enjoyed riding really really hard. On the way back I started to feel a bit seedy so I pootled. Went straight to bed when I got home and have been vomiting ever since.
Urgh.

Run 40:01 [2]
slept:7.0 shoes: fluoro yellow trabucos

Not very inspired to train yet! I did a warm-up, 1.75 terrain loops, and then jogged back with enough of a loop to break 40min and make the run loggable.

Adventure Racing race (GSAR Day 2) 4:17:00 [3]
slept:6.0

Paddle 35:49
Run 57:03
Paddle 28:45
MTB 1:19:23
MTB 43:00
Run 12:47

Somehow we finished 3rd overall - I can't imagine how! And now let us never speak of that race again.

Oh, except that John says I should emphasise positives:

1) our awesome support crew looked after us well and provided many types of cake
2) we finished the race this year
3) noone actually drowned and we did not break any rudders (we did however get beaten in a paddle by a) a team who broke two rudders and as a result did most of the course twice and b) all the other teams)
4) we got to the start line on time, both days
5) at some point someone who wasn't John managed to find a control cleanly. I can't quite recall when, but it must have happened once.
6) John did a typically great job of everything he did and remained positive throughout
7) the weather was good
8) I like riding my bike

General errand-running while my car was being serviced.

Roadie 1:00:00 [3]
slept:7.0 shoes: Shiny carbon pro lite

Just an enjoyable early morning cruise, minding my own business. Wish the stupid roadies could mind theirs. I did have one good roadie experience though, when I passed a very lean and fit-looking riders choice roadie on challenger. He was clearly just cruising, or I would not have passed him so easily, but he didn't feel the need to tell me so, and even said "Good morning!" Amazing.

Windtrainer 1:12:00 intensity: (48:00 @2) + (24:00 @5)

More single legged stuff. I worked much harder this time, having figured out that I could.

Sunday Oct 4, 2009 #

Orienteering (oz champs relay) 1:01:59 [3]
slept:7.0 shoes: fluoro yellow trabucos

2nd leg, with the pressure put on by Cath who ran first and came in very close behind the lead pack.
John says I should focus on positives.
1) I was pretty clean on 12 out of 13 controls.
2) I did not find any pythons or drop bears
3) I managed to tag Rachel before the mass start, just
4) I found all the controls and also the finish.
5) If I had not lost 15min on that one control, we would only have moved up one place (although, if I had been faster and cleaner on the other controls, we would have won!)

I am not disappointed that I was not faster or cleaner on the other controls - I did as well as can be expected with my lack of experience and running speed. I am very annoyed at myself for getting distracted and making that one stupid error. It wasn't a parallel error even, but a 90 degree error, which would have been obvious at any stage if I had looked at my compass. Punter mistake.

Orienteering race (Oz champs long) 1:27:32 [3]
slept:12.0 shoes: fluoro yellow trabucos

I won a third place badge in W21A. Even John looked surprised and he is usually very good at pretending to think I am good at orienteering. Those other entrants should be ashamed of themselves.

Spent a very long time circling randomly just outside one control circle, and had a very very lucky and accidental recovery from a poorly executed long leg just afterwards.

Orienteering race (oz champs sprint) 16:40 [4]
slept:0.0 shoes: fluoro yellow trabucos

Great run, for me - no big brain explosions, I found all the controls and enjoyed running.
I should have gone home after this.

Run (dog jog) 20:00 [3]
slept:6.0 shoes: fluoro yellow trabucos

Quick lap with the dog before work, just so that I could log some sort of training for 7 days in a row.
