Hiking with Sam and Presto up Stopple Point! We decided to finally head out to hike up our first mountain in NY. Trail reports suggested that the snow in the Catskills was basically melted, so we headed there. The road to the trailhead was still closed, so we had to park about a mile away from the start and hike in on the roads, but we did get to see North/South Lake, which was nice. The trail up to Artist's Rock had a decent number of people on it, but not so many that we felt uncomfortable. The view from Artist's Rock across the Hudson Valley was quite good, and we met an IG on the cliff, which was fun. Presto was highly intrigued! We also found a tick on Presto, which was less fun. I guess we really are back on the east coast...
The trail was fairly rugged, but my ankle was feeling decent, so we continued on up. We made it to Badman's Cave, which has kind of a ridiculous name, and then headed on up to North Point, which had some great views. Then it was just a flattish 1.7 miles over to Stopple Point. There was a tiny rock outcropping at Stopple Point that we sat on for a snack before heading back the way we came to North Point.
We took the other way down from North Point, but my ankle was much less happy with going downhill than it had been going uphill. Luckily, we were able to take a trail that went straight back to the car, rather than the trailhead, which made for a bit flatter hike back to the car. Yay for mountains!
