Orienteering race (ski-o) 2:00:00 [4] 6.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
Ski-o at Pineridge. I opted for the 2-hour score o because I thought it would be a better practice run for next week's Snowgaine. It turned out mostly to be a test of my home-built ski-o map holder.
In my first attempt at bushwacking, I got confused by an unmapped blazed boundary and ended up skiing off the map. I was treated to a lot of abandoned cars and trucks in the woods, and a ridiculously low final score.
But if I had played it safe and stayed on the trails, I would not have learned the following: my map holder needed better quality cord, I needed to tie bowlines instead of regular shoelace knots, I needed thicker rubber bands, and a better way to affix the compass (accomplished with velcro and a cable tie).
I know this means nothing to anyone who may be reading this, but it is going to be featured in the next issue of ONA.
