Rogaining race 9:40:00 [5] 24.0 mi (24:10 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Exodus trail shoes
Swept the course with 2+ hours to spare! One of 7 teams to manage that (we were 6th) out of 20 overall.
Lost 50 minutes on a control hidden in a cave. The cave was near the edge of the circle, and after exhausting possibilities at the center of the circle, I went to the mouth of it, then climbed on top of it (a tremendous amount of work), but neglected to look inside it. We tried each of the adjacent reentrants, then back to our original spot where about 5 teams were gathered. Finally someone thought to look inside the cave. There were no control descriptions, which obviously would have helped.
Aside from this, our navigation was great. In fact, many of the controls were easy because they were meant to be reached via bike and canoe during the simultaneous adventure race.
Upon reflection, I think I would have preferred the adventure race. The adventure racers had something like a white course (described as a run), then a brown course, then a yellow course on bikes (with some hard route choices given the serpentine bike trails; I assume you weren't allowed to ride off-trail), then a white course in kayaks, then a blue course. For the rogainers, the run, bike and kayak controls were all just too easy.
Google Earth tells me just under 5,000 feet of climb!
