Note

I just finished rereading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I will see the final movie in the near future, and while it is probably more enjoyable to treat the movies and novels as separate interpretations of the same story or different stories altogether, I am curious to see how the movie represents the events in the books.

Recent additions to my list of books to read are Locke's Two Treatises on Government and 1984.

Running 54:20 intensity: (27:10 @1) + (27:10 @2) 6.94 km (7:50 / km) +2m 7:49 / km

In recognition of the release of the movie of Harry Potter 7 part 2, Lori set a Harry-Potter-O at a local university. In attendance were Ross "Top Shelf", Sam, Dan, Brendan, Brendan's sister Catherine, Ed, Lori, and SGB. The event was an hour score-O with ten-point and twenty-point controls and the criterion that any ten-point controls had to be visited before all twenty-point controls. Additionally, there were six map fragments - one with Stephen at the Start/Finish, available between 0:20 and 0:40 race time, and five hidden at control sites. Lori ran around during the race, moving the fragments among the controls.

Perhaps unwisely, I ran for part of the event, in clear violation of my decision to build up slowly. In my defense, this was a special event, and I was judicious about deciding to run at any time. I walked about half the course. I had some discomfort during the race, but no pain. I visited 17/20 ten-point controls, 10/10 twenty-point controls, and 5/6 hidden controls (worth 50 points) for a total of 620. I think I beat everyone but Ross.

I forget the nickname Ross gave me during the fantastic smorgasbord that followed.

Biking (Commute) 20:00 [3] 8.0 km (24.0 kph)
shoes: Trek 7.1 FX

About; to and from bowling.

Canoeing (Canoeing) 1:16:08 [3] 9.18 km (8:18 / km) +2m 8:17 / km

Keith and I went canoeing in his slower, yellow boat in the Charles River at Auburndale/Newton. Afterward, we got Mexican food at Margarita's in Waltham.

Bowling 4 [1]
shoes: Dexter Ricky II Bowling

I think that my bowling is still encumbered by my gimpy right leg. Alternatively, I am still a terrible bowler. I was all over the place today; my precision was very low. I think the problems are mainly in my approach; I bowled with a 14-pound ball as usual. I balance my release by both throwing out my left arm and swinging my right foot behind me. The arm is unconventional. For people good enough to hit high scores on the first shot but not good enough to string multiple strikes together, spares are almost as good as strikes. My spare percentage was atrocious this session; I just couldn't get my game together. Games with fewer than five marks are unacceptable.

81 53 35 3/ 72 -5 4/ -/ 62 9/9 = 109
-5 X X -3 72 7- 81 72 71 9- = 92
81 16 X 6/ X 9/ 6- X 71 4- = 128
6- 13 5/ 9- 9/ 63 9- 62 81 9/6 = 105

Strike percentage: 5/42 = 11.9% (avg 17.2%)
Spare conversion: 9/35 = 25.7% (avg 33.7%)
First ball pins: 6.29 (avg 7.07)
9-pin spares: 4/7

In the first game, I averaged only 4.91 pins on the first shot, my second lowest since January. Eighty games so far this year.

Biking (Commute) 35:00 [1] 12.0 km (20.6 kph) +3m
ahr:130 max:170 shoes: Trek 7.1 FX

Commute to and from work and to Charles River Canoe and Kayak in Kendall after work. GPS data for novelty, and included some time where I stopped and looked up the CRCK location on my phone.

Canoeing (Kayaking) 59:59 intensity: (17:49 @0) + (28:45 @1) + (9:10 @2) + (3:57 @3) + (18 @4) 5.18 km (11:35 / km) +2m 11:34 / km
ahr:108 max:156

Jess and I went kayaking around the basin. Our boats were slow, and I was somewhat faster than Jess, so I slowed to stay with her, apart from the occasional excursion to check out a buoy or piss off some geese. A few of these quick expeditions took the form of circles, as the GPS indicates. The sunset was magnificent.
9 PM

Biking 1:16:05 intensity: (2:39 @1) + (11:51 @2) + (34:39 @3) + (25:33 @4) + (1:23 @5) 30.46 km (24.0 kph) +41m
ahr:148 max:178 shoes: Trek 7.1 FX

After dinner and walking Jess home, I decided that I hadn't been sufficiently active for the day, so I set out for some hard bike riding. I rode along the esplanade, so my speed was governed by the requirement to avoid killing pedestrians. When I first rode past the Hatch Shell, the Friday night movie had just ended, and I had to dodge legions. I listened to the Tron: Legacy soundtrack, which was epic. I should probably upgrade my bike light to something with more power, like the Death Star superlaser.

Note
(rest day)

I am taking a rest day today because my schedule for today has fewer opportunities for training than is typical. I have aggressive over the past two days, and my legs feel sluggish. When I resume tomorrow, I will aim for a lighter, more consistent training load.

Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 is sublime; the passion of the soaring melody in the strings at the end of the third movement is overwhelming. The ending is disappointing; clearly Prokofiev slapped the last few measures on without much thought.

Lately, I have been listening to The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, lots of Tchaik generally, and Tchaik 6 specifically. Insert motivational tautology.

Elliptical 16:00 [1] 2.4 km (6:40 / km)

After a somewhat lazy vacation (recovery) day from work, I set out for an evening of training. I cycled 50-ish minutes, with four loops around Fresh Pond. I was told by a lady that there exist rules governing the reservation's use, and the speed limit on the path is 5 mph. What she probably meant was that bikes are restricted, though I can find no evidence of this in the City of Cambridge rules. I explored the "bike path" that she claimed circled the park, which really only exists for about 1/4 of the circuit. The other 3/4 is on streets, which is less desirable than cycling on a protected path, even if dodging pedestrians is a legitimate concern. Perhaps I will spend more time on the Minuteman, which is probably better for my tires.

Anyway, after my cycling excursion, I spent 15 easy minutes on the elliptical, then six minutes on a treadmill. I was excited to try the treadmill, and varied my gait and foot strike without discomfort. I finished my workout with 2 weight circuits.

Running (Treadmill) 6:00 [1] 0.8 km (7:30 / km)
shoes: 201104 NB 759

Yay running! The legs felt good, though I noticed a clear difference in my rebound on the left and right legs. Until I even that out (probably through strengthening the right leg), I won't try anything longer than 30 minutes. I plan to build up my treadmill use very slowly.

Strength training 10:00 [5]

2 circuits of:
- 20 split squats (bodyweight)
- 32 elbow-to-knee crunches, each side
- 32 calf raises (16 both legs, 8 each side; bodyweight)
- 32 tuck-ups
- 15 side bends (+50 lbs)

My limited strength training over the past few months is most obvious in my upper body, but as my tibias heal, I will increase the emphasis on my legs.

Biking 49:21 intensity: (12 @1) + (5:51 @2) + (19:36 @3) + (21:13 @4) + (2:29 @5) 19.59 km (23.8 kph) +48m
