Setting control 3 for ARDF training and picking up controls 3 and 1. Generally uneventful and relaxing; there was a not inconsiderable amount of climb. While setting control 3, I was stung by a wasp; at first, I thought I had been attacked by a particularly formidable deer fly, but I quickly realized that I had hung the flag near a wasp nest. I moved the flag about 50 m. I had no discernible reaction to the sting apart from pain near the site for about an hour.

ARDF training on the 80 m band at Breakheart Reservation. The woods were very runnable, conditions were pleasant (21-22 C), and insects were few. Distance is a guess.

The correct order for the envelope configuration was 1-3-4-2-5, which I executed. The optimal total time (in minutes) according to Nik and Vadim to arrive at each control on cycle was 6 - 13 - 19 - 27 - 35 - 37 (to finish). I dispute that it's possible to have run the distance from control 3 to 4 even with good data on its location. My times were:

Control 1: 1100; lost a cycle because of a 15 s mistake checking the direction of the minimum
Control 3: 1920; found off it cycle, but had a good bearing as the cycle ended at 1800; also set the control
Control 4: 3118; I stumbled upon it after falling short as the cycle ended and wandering in the general direction. What's remarkable is that I found it 218 after the cycle ended
Control 2: 5118; I had an epic fail on the way and lost two cycles, but I was waiting in an excellent position when the cycle started and arrived at the control in 18 s. Lori was right behind me, and Vadim apparently right behind her.
Control 5: 5945; a good control, found on cycle simultaneous with Vadim
Finish: 6130; I bolted ahead of Vadim.

Overall, I lost four cycles: one cycle on 1 because of an error in my process, one cycle on four because I was slow and didn't have a good enough idea of where the control was to attack intelligently, and two cycles on two because I left the trails prematurely and wandered around in thick green. Control 4 was difficult; Lori, who set it, lost a cycle. I'm particularly upset about the cycles at controls 1 and 2. Had I not failed there, I would have an excellent run, edging Vadim by a minute. Nik finished in 42 minutes, Vadim in 47.

While it was my intent to rerun the CSU Day 2 blue course today, the feedback I got from everyone I invited to join me suggested that I was embarking to my death. I yielded to these concerns and ran the Skyline Trail instead. I wasn't sure if I could pace myself easily, but I didn't really have any trouble with that - once I got into a rhythm, it was not difficult to maintain. I ran clockwise, starting at the closest approach of the trail with South Border Road by the water towers at the south end of the southern Reservoir. I reached the Sheepfold at 40:00, but I discovered that Brendan and I cut a significant part of the trail - the Skyline Trail summits Pine Hill (excellent view) and loosely parallels South Border Road from the southeast part of the map to the northwest.

I think I could run it in 75 minutes; I lost about 8 minutes looking for the trail, e.g. just after the sheepfold. Stopping to look around for the trail further complicates matters because you lose your rhythm.

I ran at a steady 2/2 breathing, sometimes moving up to 1/1 for hills. I need to get shoes with better grip; my new running shoes do not grip terrain well, especially when wet.

I am disappointed to see in retrospect that I have run so little in the past two months. For August, it is my goal to run on average thirty minutes each day (1 rest day per week) - 13.5 hours total, and orienteer and bike 3 hours per week. This gives a total of 25.5 hours of training, which is reasonable given the low impact of biking and orienteering.

However, Lori leads the competition with 49:31 of training vs my 39:49, so it looks improbable that I will be able to overtake her healthily (anyone up for a Rogaine?).
