Running 1:44:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @1) + (44:00 @2) 20.27 km (5:08 / km) +93m 5:01 / km
shoes: 201409 Saucony Ride 6

This was difficult. My workout was to run about 10 km at a sub-tempo pace - around 4:30/km. It was bitterly cold, about -12 C with some breeze. I bundled - LSL/SL; my only exposed skin was the opening on my balaclava. Still, running with my mouth and nose exposed was unpleasant, so I stayed covered as much as possible despite the constrained breathing. While the bikepaths in Somerville were nicely cleared, the Minuteman from Alewife had about 1 cm of snow and ice with intermittent open patches. I'm quite satisfied with the outcome of the workout. Oddly enough, my left bicep hurts.

Tonight's track workout was 5x1 km and 2x200m. I was late - arriving just as people were starting the first bout. I joined for the recovery jog, then hopped on the Patrick train. I estimated that Patrick would be running each km about 10 seconds faster than I wanted to, so I would gradually give up ground with a goal to be within a quarter lap of him at the end. This seemed to work ok.

Splits:
1 km: 3:28, 3:27, 3:33, 3:26
200: 33, 29.

Apparently we were alternating 5k and 8k paces for the km, but the lead group didn't really understand. Amore, Jon, Mark, and a couple others were close behind me on most of the bouts. Amore in particular is a freight train; her pressure was a friendly motivator on the last km. Alex was the only orienteer present, and Magnus' absence continues to demoralize me.

Cold, arduous. About 80 cm of snow had fallen on Cambridge in the past two days. Many sections were plowed and cleared, but many still had enough snow to slow me down.

Easy running in the snow at Bradley Parker. The park is apparently fantastic - good parking, 3 square kilometers, a rich network of trails, restrooms, good topography, and even two very large fields which could make good arena locations. Unfortunately, about 75% of the woods that I observed are filled with impenetrable thickets. Perhaps with an army of goats and a month, the park could be turned into fantastic terrain. At present, I can't imagine setting a course above orange there. With deep enough snow, it would be pretty good for ski-O, though I don't think grooming is allowed.

2x10 minute cruise intervals at tempo pace followed by an easy hour run home. There was about 3-4 cm of new snow on the ground, and the temperature was about -1 C. My Bare-Grips gave me more confidence, though I was still a little wary of black ice. Running through the basin was sublime - I was totally alone, in a blissfully still and clear night with the lights of the city illuminating the frozen river.

Note
slept:9.0

I really need to do a better job getting more sleep after hard interval workouts; they particularly exhaust me.

I orienteered like a potato on Saturday. Need to be less of a potato and more like Philippe. While the main goal is being faster for longer, this breaks down into speed, endurance, strength, weight, and technique. I'm not really sure which goals to focus on in the months ahead; trying to improve everything with a generalist approach is the default.

Run to track workout.

Running 38:00 [1] 8.0 km (4:45 / km)
shoes: 201409 Saucony Ride 6

CSU Indoor track workout. I arrived just as the warmup stretches were finishing. Terry was at a CSU Ski race, so fearless leader Jon took the helm. The workout tonight was a ladder: 200m, 4, 6, 8; 12; 8, 6, 4, 2 - 5.2k total. I felt quite good after the rest day yesterday, but I started a little too aggressively and faded during the back half a little.

Splits:
200: 35, 34
400: 1:21, 1:15
600: 2:00, 2:04
800: 2:43, 2:54
1200: 4:19

My legs just weren't turning over quickly enough during the 12, and I willingly gave up ground to rabbits Kevin and Patrick to try to hold constant, steady intensity. I should execute an Nx400 workout - perhaps 12 or 16 reps. After the dismal second 800, I recovered and finished well. I even felt pretty good after the workout, surprisingly. I was the only O-person in attendance besides Neil Martin. It was tough psychologically to run bouts without my spirit guide Magnus.

Running 15:02 [1] 2.17 km (6:56 / km) +36m 6:24 / km
shoes: 201410 Inov-8 Oroc 280s

Warmup run to the start with a few bouts while waiting for my start time. My legs felt springier than yesterday. D'kota, the captain of his high school O-team, and his coach came over to chat with me about the US team briefly. It was neat to see so many enthusiastic and friendly teenagers; I hope some make it to adulthood orienteering. I think this reinforces the importance of the National Team making an appearance at Interscholastics and A-meets more generally. Boris, Ken, the JNT Juniors and I all wore various Team USA regalia.

Orienteering 1:01:22 [4] 9.02 km (6:48 / km) +213m 6:05 / km

I was a little pissed after yesterday's run and resolved to fight harder today; I wanted it to hurt more. I tweaked my ankles a few times during the race, but they were never severe enough to cause more than a moment of discomfort and a slight slowing. Visibility was again so high and features so big that it was hard to mess up too badly, but the 1:15 scale made reading some of the finer details - like copious erosion gullies - difficult. I also elected to run without calf protection, which was unfortunate as the brambles were thicker today.

My bigger mistakes were route choice: 30s at 10, 40s at 16, 20s at 20. On execution, I lost 15s at 2 to hesitation, 10s at 3 to overlooking a reentrant covered by the numbers, 10s at 8 to hesitation, 15s at 9, 30 more seconds at 10 going to the wrong reentrant, 10s at 17 hesitating, and 20s at 22 overshooting my attack. I lost 15s each at 18 and 19 going to the wrong feature in the circle. Total route loss = 1:30, 2:20 execution. Again, Ken was stronger; he smoked Boris and I by 10s on 13, a trivial 60s leg that I didn't err.

The course setting was great and made excellent use of the terrain. Yesterday had a bit more route choice and more climb, but the course was still delightfully varied. I think the biggest takeaways - apart from a general need to get faster - are that I need to do more terrain training. Climb and squishy, variable ground are foreign.

CSU swept the podium, which was great. I talked with some of the interscholastic folks during Boris' course review and acquainted myself with the JNT juniors better. It was also fun hanging out with Clem and Jeremy.

Must get faster.

Day 1 of the Navigator Cup, Red Top Mountain State Park; a lethargic performance. The terrain was open and fast, with rolling hills and reentrants in Piedmont Appalachia. I made about 2:00 of execution errors, and 2:00 of route choice errors. The woods were so visible and the features so large that making big mistakes was difficult.

My warmup was a little shorter than I wanted; my legs felt heavy and sluggish. I couldn't find my O-socks; I thought I had left them back in Boston, but it turns out they were in the bottom of my suitcase. Fail. Anyway, I ran with compression sleeves instead. I've never run with them, so I don't know if they contributed to my general feeling of slowness.

I never felt spritely in the woods, and in comparing splits with Boris and the Keninator, I was running more slowly and losing 10-15s on basically every leg. I'm disappointed by my performance today, but hopefully I can improve in the next few weeks.

I made a 30s error in the circle at 1 when I wasn't confident and had to trundle along the reentrant for a little while to find the cliff. I also knocked the stand over when I punched, so I spent maybe 10s prospecting to put it back up. I made a parallel error at 7 where I exited 6 the wrong way and took a suboptimal route via the road, losing about 45s. I lost 45s total on 3 and 4 with a bad route choice. I then lost about 60s total on route choice to 16 and 17. Excepting the (erroneous) finish split, I beat Ken and Boris on only 6 of 32 possible person-splits, which sort of tells the story of this race. It was cool for CSU to decisively sweep the podium.

Tonight's workout was a 20 min tempo run at 4:03/km, postponed from yesterday. Conditions were moderate; -4 C, breezy, and a light snowfall. There was about a cm of snow on the ground with some patches of black ice. After a long warmup, I turned on my 180 bpm techno. I focused on feeling relaxed for the first few km, and my pace was steady and good. I started hurting a bit over the last km - I think more due to the stresses of the cadence than the speed. I hit a few patches of ice, but I think my foot placement is directly beneath my center of mass - I didn't fall or slide, I just lost traction.

A delightful evening long run; the skies were clear, and the temperature was a balmy -1 C. It's amazing how much of a difference 10 C makes. I was a little overdressed (SL/S, gloves, speedy hat, buff). My pace was steady and plodding, and I felt good throughout the run. I faded after about 1:50 over the last few km. The roads and sidewalks had perhaps 1-2 cm of erratic snow and ice. This was a newish route, encircling the Fells and Boojum; my pace was a bit faster than a similar route I ran six months ago in sweltering July heat. I carried a light but no map and got lost once near km 7.

Note

The NEOC Holiday party this evening prominently featured the Patriots - Ravens Divisional Playoff game, which the Pats won narrowly 35-31. The Parsons were excellent hosts as always.

Magnus and I were the only ones to correctly answer the map snippet challenge, where you tried to identify a map by a small 5 cm x 5 cm section. The answers were Hammond Pond, Great Brook Farm, Estabrook Woods, Nobscot, and High Rock - the last was the trickiest, as we have only had three local meets there in the past few years. It was hardly a fair competition, as Magnus and I are both on the mapping committee and have pored over maps. poured chocolate milk over maps.

I won the M-21 Points Series by a wide margin; my competition has suffered attrition from moving, graduating, and having enormous babies. There was some excellent cold ping pong; Magnus and I in particular played a best of 7 games match which Magnus won 4-3. Izzy talked some excellent foosball trash which maybe we'll settle one day. The only accessible tables I know of are in bars, so it might be a few years.

Road races I've signed up for:
Fudgcicle 5k: A series of 6 5k races in Tewksbury, 30 mins north of Boston. They are at 8 AM on Saturdays, and the road course is kind of boring, but it's a nice low-key series. I've run two of these guys before.
New Bedford Half Marathon, March 15 - great timing two weeks before the team trials

Anyone want to join me? I'm also considering running the Super Sunday 5 mile race in Kendall Square on Superbowl Sunday, but I'm less enthusiastic about that one. This 15k road race on Feb 8 also is appealing, because 15k is a more satisfying distance than 5k.

Evening tempo run; this run was interesting because it was -10 C with a few mm of snowfall from this evening. Fortunately, the wind was negligible, but I overcompensated: I wore SL shirts, tights, gloves, hat, and a hoodie. It turns out that a hoodie over layers running at threshold pace seriously insulates, and I was quite sweaty by the end. shoes: 201409 Saucony Ride 6

Easy long run circumnavigating the Mystic Lakes. Conditions were pleasantly warm but soggy: 10 C, humid, and with puddles of winter slush after yesterday's snow and rain. The trail around Mystic Lakes isn't all that spectacular, but the lakes themselves are a well-defined objective that's less familiar to me than runs along the Charles. I brought a street-O map and considered enveloping Spy Pond, too, but ultimately decided the single loop was adequate. I felt good - legs were tight initially but loosened up nicely. I felt like I could have kept running for some distance more.

My upper body - chest, shoulders, and arms - felt sore after the run. My arms are relatively long - my wingspan is about 15 cm longer than my height, and I wonder if longer and heavier arms put more stress on the muscles during a running motion. This might lead to additional muscle, exacerbating the problem. I suppose the test would be to see if longer-armed runners tend to have disproportionately more upper body mass; moment of inertia and running form might also play a role.

In famous O-people news, it turns out that Matthias Kyburz' half marathon debut was 1:08:24 some years ago. Nuts.

I elected to run a track workout; the original plan was 12x400m on 2 minute cycles. Apparently a wintry mix storm was coming, so I moved my workout up, but when I went outside, flakes were falling steadily. The sky was like a snowglobe, and there were 2-3 cm of powder on the ground. I warmed up, did some strides, and turned on 180 bpm techno. I didn't have a readable watch, so I just counted strides - 45 breaths to 60s.

I was slower than I would have liked, and I think a few of those seconds must have been due to the snow. Traction wasn't great, and as I packed the snow down in lane 1, it worsened. I decided to call it a day after 8.

Fells Skyline Trail with Cristina, Magnus, Andy Donaldson, and Jeff Saeger. This was Cristina's first Skyline foray, and we had a great time. Conditions were nigh perfect, with a temp of 1 C, clear skies, and a mild breeze. We chatted up the chats for most of the trip. Sam, Judy, and Hilly were diligently hiking around to hasten Sam's convalescence.

Bowling 2 [1]
shoes: Dexter Ricky II Bowling

After the Fells, I went Candlepin (i.e. fake) bowling with Cristina, Sam, Hilly, and Judy at Lanes and Games. We had a great time, encouraging each other, talking trash, and taking videos of our respective walkups. Contrary to my assertion that candlepin is a random number generator rather than a game of skill, we improved noticeably in the second game - though I don't really have a null to establish the probability of such an improvement without an actual change in mean bowling ability.

To my surprise, I bowled two spares in the second game - something I have never done in candlepin; Cristina and Sam also had one. A girl in the neighboring lane bowled a strike. Cristina won both games, beating me by 7 and 3 points respectively. The second was heartbreaking - I was up 18 points after 5 frames, then choked. I'm trying not take this too seriously- especially since candlepin bowling is not recognized by CSU bowling as a legitimate club activity, but I really don't like not meeting my own expectations. Still, it was a fun outing. Judy was most improved, with a leap of 33 points from game 1 to 2. Our combined score jumped by 79 points from game 1 to 2.

My scores:
35- -11 -3- 71- 3-- 431 44- 711 34- 42- = 62
5/ 6-1 711 7/ 314 23- 5-- 3-3 411 -12 = 78

Biking 53:52 [1] 18.18 km (20.3 kph) +3m

New Year's cruise with das Fahrrad along the Esplande. Das Fahrrad is my first drop handlebar road bike, and it is a sublime joy to ride it. I have biked to work a handful of times with it, and the speed, lightness, and precision of the machine are heightened because the most recent bike I had used previously was a 20 kg Hubway 3 speed clunker.

I find myself with the curious distinction of having access to three bikes. My mainstay is a Trek 7.1 FX hybrid I bought in 2009, and I have used it regularly for 4-season commuting and errands since. In November 2013, the lock jammed for a couple of weeks, leaving the poor bike buried in a snowstorm at my office. While I eventually freed it with WD-40, I subscribed to Hubway - Boston's bike share program, which I've used for the past year to commute. Bike sharing systems appeal to me as a facilitator of bike use in Boston; for my own use, using Hubway allows one-way bike trips, which makes running to work easier.

I ordered a Battaglin S11 road bike a while ago from the website wiggle. I have no interest in bike racing; I intended the bike for cross training, some merry jaunts around the region, and perhaps a century or two. Ordering a bike online was certainly a gamble, but the price point for a bike with a Shimano 105 groupset seemed to justify it. The result seems positive so far. My office offers bike commuter reimbursement, apparently as a consequence of the Clean Air Act of 1995, so I finally took my hybrid for a major tune up and replacement of corroded parts. I don't have the bike back yet, but this will leave me with access to three bikes. I suppose selling my hybrid is a reasonable solution, as the road bike, Hubway, public transportation, and walking can suitably cover my needs.

The road bike is an absolute delight to ride, but my back muscles are not acquainted with the stresses of pedaling a roadie. While the temperature was cold, four shirt layers and two pant layers left me more than comfortable. I'm optimistic that I can sustain 30+ kph for extended periods; traffic on the esplanade restricted my maximum safe speed.
