Orienteering race 36:54 [5] *** 3.9 km (9:28 / km) +140m 8:01 / km
spiked:13/13c shoes: Salomon Spikecross 5 GTX

Morgan Territory. Start at 11:04. Unexpectedly cold: 48 degrees with a strong, chilly wind. Wore long-sleeved gray shirt under my O-top. Temp was fine while I was out on the course.

A very fine day of orienteering. First on Brown (3.9 km, 140m climb), nearly 8 mins ahead of the next fastest. Advertised as 98m, but it was considerably more, though still not bad.

Surprised myself by being able to run quite well, navigated extremely well, and was aggressive throughout. Ground was perfect for running. A really nice day. Only one small navigation error, off to the right a bit as I got near #7, corrected quickly. Not much hesitation. Might have missed the fastest route a couple of times.

Took 1:10 to drive from San Anselmo. Would’ve been five minutes faster except for getting behind a real slow-poke going up the hill.

Note
(rest day)

Walked around the block at two different times today, but legs are still very tired and right knee still has soreness on some steps (and that hasn't happened before while walking). I'll be amazed if I actual can run even half-way decently at Morgan Territory tomorrow.

Today again had some very stressful periods. Sure hope those start fading away soon.

Note
(rest day)

After trying to get out all day, finally drove out to Phoenix Lake, sat on the dam for a while, but the sun was pretty strong, so hung out at a bench about a quarter mile south; sat on a rock jutting out into the lake for quite a while.

Running (Easy distance) 17:27 [3] 1.5 mi (11:38 / mi)

Lake Lagunitas. This is why we live in the Bay Area: February, 70 degrees, light breeze, green hills - what a day. When I was done cooling down, stretched on the platform over the spillway and then just hung out there for 15 minutes. It was astonishingly tranquil. The shimmering lake, Mt Tam in the background, bird calls, leaves gently rustling in the breeze, water splashing down the spillway, no other humans around - wow.

Despite two days off, legs felt heavy and I felt really weighed down by my 5 pounds gained in the last year. Gotta a lot of work to do to get back in shape. Just took it easy, enjoying the beautiful day and scenery, yet afterwards was exhausted. Slept for 20 mins in the car, then a long lunch at The Good Earth, then an hour nap when I got home. Long way to go to catch up on sleep.

Had hoped to get out by 11:00, but had to assist L and didn't get to start my warm up until 12:30.

Right knee hurt for the first ten minutes (it has been hurting for a few weeks, but usually feels ok sooner), especially on the (little) downhills.

Jogged up to the east side of the dam (hadn't done that before), walking the last (steep) part and then over the rocky part of the trail. Started from the end of the rocks, going clockwise, finishing at the E end of the dam.

448 junction leading to first bridge (other fork goes to Eldrige Grade)
556 middle of second bridge
222 middle of third bridge
214 junction w/Rock Springs Rd
104 trail leading to platform over spillway
101 E end of dam

[Easy distance]

Running warm up/down 6:00 [2] 0.35 mi (17:09 / mi)
shoes: Speedcross 5

Cool down, starting again from the end of the rocks, exploring a couple of the peninsulas.

(rest day)

Drove to the South Bay for a 4pm dental appointment, then met Charlie and Roz for dinner at Indochine in Palo Alto.

Note
(rest day)

Drove down from the cabin to Greenfield, then continued on to Oracle. Came home trying to beat the rush hour, but that didn't work out very well.

Sonoma County State Beach, Goat Rock Area, Kortum Trail. From Blind Beach parking to edge of Furlong Gulch and then back to Sunset Rocks. Lots of loop backs (4 totaling 804); ‘Usual” BB->FG->SR run in 4658.

High 50’s, clear and sunny. Remarkably gorgeous day. Trail has dried out. Wanted to take it easy, and I did, but it didn't feel easy. This was a bit faster than when I ran 6+ here a few years ago, but considerably slower than these shorter runs have been, especially on the SR<->SB parts, which is fine except that I felt so beat afterwards. Gotta a lotta of work to do to get back in shape (and to lose the 5 pounds I've gained in the last year).

Last loop back was mostly to get the time up to 55 minutes.

Walk back over the hill to the Kortoum trailhead. This was tough on my legs.
