Orienteering race 56:16 [5] *** 3.81 km (14:47 / km) +62m 13:40 / km
spiked:9/13c shoes: Yellow Falcons

Harris Center, Hancock NH. Day 1 of Boulder Dash A-meet. Start 11:19. Sunny, temp in high 40's. Went with short sleeve O-top and that was just fine.

Brown 3.7km, 150m climb.

First control was streamered. Easy to get to attack point 150m from #2 but sloppy from there leading to 5 min error. After that, was pretty accurate and when I finished I actually thought I'd done pretty well. But Bob L, Steve T and Ken W were way ahead of me (even subtracting the five min error) so it's clear that I'd have to run faster and with a lot more confidence to get anywhere near them. But at least I was able to read the terrain.

Running warm up/down 9:00 [2] 0.65 mi (13:51 / mi)
shoes: Yellow Falcons

Warm up: jog to start. Quarter mile, 3 mins. Legs felt good.

Cool down: 0.4 mi, 6 mins.

Pawtuckaway. Gorgeous day. However, got there late and had almost no time. Jogged and walked some, but felt like I accomplished nothing.

Orienteering race 55:37 [5] *** 4.2 km (13:15 / km)
spiked:14/18c shoes: Yellow Falcons

Day 2. Fine day of orienteering for me. Early on realized woods were too thick for me, so after #4 took trails for nearly every control. Ran very strongly. 3rd overall on Brown, only 5 minutes behind the leader, Steve Tarry. (not counting US Women's Team member Cristina Luis, who dropped down to Brown for the day.) For the two day combined, 3rd overall, only 28 secs behind Bob Lux.

Biting wind made it chillier than I anticipated but stuck to the plan of wearing just my short sleeved shirt on top, and that was exactly right.

Somewhere early in the course I landed hard on a rock with my left instep. It hurt the rest of the way but didn't impede me at all. An hour after finishing, though, it was killing me and I was concerned it might be something serious; fortunately, after icing and ibuprofen the pain subsided and it appears to be just a bruise. Also went to the first aid folks because a fair amount of blood was coming out of both biceps, but they were just minor puncture wounds. None of that spoiled my enjoyment of the day.
