NAOC long distance.

Overall a solid race for me. I did well on the first 3 controls off the start, being cautious but moving well. I was nervous about 5 and didn't have a good plan. I just checked things off as I went by, and this slowed me down slightly. 8 also looked like a leg where I would have to be careful, so I aimed off to the right to hit the steep reeentrant by 9. I ran this too cautiously though and lost lots of time here simply due to speed. I took the simpler route choice and I should have been running it hard. On 11 I went up the parallel reentrant to the left, and lost more time than I thought, since I figured it out pretty quickly. 14 was my first real mistake. I wanted to see the water stop going across the reentrant, but I didn't. I then thought I was on the left hilltop, when I was really on the right one. Cut through the rocks, but couldn't get things to match up. Came out the other side of the rocky area, but still was having trouble matching things up. Went back in and matched some cliffs and found it. Used my magnifier and made a plan for finding #15. Still cut through the wrong set of cllffs and checked the wrong cliff bottom before turning around and seeing my control. Ran hard down and through the spectator control and died going up the hill to 18. I was pushing hard, maybe too hard, and it was almost over. I had the wrong image in my mind running to 19 and told myself I didn't want to cross the trail. I spent some time on the hillside running along the trail before I realized it. And then, instead of cutting straight over the nose, I ran back down to the end of the nose and had to run back up it. On 20 I was looking for a boulder at the edge of the clearing. I ran into the field and didn't see a boulder. I saw the other control and ran a bit towards it, but realized it wasn't mine. Slowly ran across the field, but still didn't see a boulder. Finally kept going into the rough open. I oversimplified on the map and was obviously tired. Fun to finish first, and then watch Louise and Ali have awesome races as well.

NAOC Middle Distance. I was cautious to 1 and having a bit of trouble staying on my compass. The extra start and people threw me off even though I worked hard to ignore them. Made a parallel error going to #2 and hit the pond. may have only been a 1-2 minute mistake, but then I compounded it by running off the wrong side of the pond and getting quite confused and lost. Wandered around and then found a control and figured out its feature. Was on the hill by the pond, again, and then cautiously went to my control, never quite believing I was where I thought I was. Cautious on the next few, which made me slower than usual, but I didn't have any trouble finding them. I think I was subconsciously worried about running through the arena so far behind. I did something funky in my brain and tried to run for #9 before #8, but then got confused. All there witnessed my confusion :) Was almost at 9 when I ran back for 8 and continued. Clean rest of the course but I didn't have the spirit in me. I have a rule of no giving up in orienteering, as you never know how others are doing. This was a hard rule to follow today and, although I didn't follow it perfectly with running speed, I navigated cleanly and smart through the last loop.

I wore my new ankle brace today and it gave me a blister on the inside of my foot which was rubbing the whole way. The blister means I will tape the ankle instead for the rest of the week.
