Team Trials Middle warmup. Jogging to the start with Ross, which was fun :) We had close start times both days and it was fun to warm up together. Decided to wear my Falcon studded o shoes today because of the rainy weather. I haven't worn studded shoes in a long time, as I find the inov8s have really good grip. It's hard to tell if there is a difference but I did spend a lot of this course running in stream beds and I did have good grip on the mossy rocks. Logs still slippery.

A pretty good middle course for me! It's interesting how my races went this weekend, with the middle certainly being my best race. I think I went into it with the right attitude - don't get lost! I told myself that it didn't matter if I took the "longer" route to every control as long as I found it with ease. This worked very well on most legs and I'm really happy with how many of the legs went. Everything made sense and was exactly where I expected it to be. A clean beginning, finding the old car and the boulder with the control on it on the way to #1. Then ran the stream bed and cut up a bit late and had to come back up the nose to #8 and ran down the wrong nose to #9 and had to cross the reentrant. Hesitated going to #11 as I thought the ride was the trail and couldn't for the life of me figure out what the boulder was doing on the left side of the trail. Missed 13, but caught it very well. Ran too far on the trail and attacked from the further rocky hilltop. Slowly moving down the hill as I realize there is no reentrant. Thought back to what I did and realized that the distance I ran from the trail to the hilltop was too short to be the hill that I wanted to be on. Contoured around the hillside and right back into #13. Dropped down and "ran" the stream bed to 14, although it's obvious now that I should have climbed back up. At the end of the leg I ran the trail around and attacked off the trail, basically making it a yellow control and so followed my rule of taking safe routes.

All in all, a huge success for me, considering how middles normally go. Also, my highest score yet for a team trials middle :)

Team Trials Sprint race. Ran to the start and back with Cristina, then ran there on my own with pick ups when it was time for me to start.

Saw both route to #2 - around or through the water towers. Figured I should be able to get through the towers without difficulty, so took that route. Map was a bit turned around when I passed through the towers and I got off my kine, causing me to come out left of the control. Saw what looked like a parking lot and was unable to find it on my map. Ran right, and ran over the trail. Wasn't thinking clearly, as I should have followed the trail to the control. Ran to another rock feature hoping that was it. Then ran down to the trail again and came back around to find the control. In my anxiousness I overran #3 (I was also looking for a pit). As I turned around to run back to it, I saw Viktoria approaching. When I ran by #5 to the picnic tables beyond it I turned around again to see Viktoria punching #5. We ran together the rest of the way, each taking slightly different routes and her catching up a bit of ground on me when I hesitated coming into 11.

Didn't remember my relocation plan when I missed 2 and really freaked out for the next couple of controls. It's almost like my mistake took me by surprise and I had no idea what to do other than run around in circles. Will be working on that....

Froze and got soaked while running around on the model map with Kat and Corinna. But really fun to run with other people. The map seems to make sense to me.

Note

Travel day to San Francisco. Ross arrived at the airport about 20 minutes before our flight was scheduled to leave, which caused me to be quite stressed out. I had checked him in, but then had to wait for him outside of security.

Note

Went mapping on a part of the Blue Hills with dad. It was hard trying to get everything to fit right. I changed a few things but in the end needed the eraser and dad's help to get everything to fit right. Distance estimation is something that I will need to work on in order to improve. Also, reading contour lines as they go across the hillside.

Running uphill on the trail and then orienteering downhill. This was the up hill trail part. I only took a split once at the top and I have cleared my watch since then so.... this is close :)

Again, deleted my splits. Ran to one wrong boulder on one loop and had to relocate.
