First proper rogaine, and the longest time I've spent on my feet "running", the long summer runs felt a long time ago, particularly after 4 hours. Legs held up ok on the trails, but in the tough bush after 3 hours had little left. Ate tons during the event, but think terrain strength was as ever the limiting factor.
Not knowing the area well, I didn't input much into the route choice, plus in the summer series events my routes haven't been the greatest, so left it to Glenn.
Were going reasonably well for the first few hours, aside from the slog along the river in the north, covered the first 20km in under 2:40, but then the two western most controls took ages (scrappy nav, slow bush and legs) - think that hour they ate could have been better spent elsewhere and might have got us closer to Andy & Mounty. Didn't help by being scrappy in a few places, particularly towards the end.
The nav problems were usually my fault, although I have absolutely no faith in my Silva compass when it has a bubble in it, which appears to be whenever it is over about 600m altitude or under 10°c, which is really useful. 42 (dodgy circle/control placement), 62 (direction), 47 (unmarked tracks/compass), 46 (poor route), 23 (dodgy circle/placement) all sucked up time.
So a good day out all in all, and plenty learnt about navigating these sorts of events and route planning in this sort of terrain. Can't argue with coming second to Andy and Mounty, though they would have thrashed us without their injury probs given superior route.
