US Classic Champs - Green X course on the Hangman Tree map. As expected, the Day 2 terrain proved more challenging than Day 1. There was more understory and visibility was reduced. I was fine through the first 3 controls and then was a bit slow on the first long leg when I was having some trouble correlating the map to the ground on my route a little right of the straight line. I figured things out 2/3 of the way through the leg though and was ok on my approach. Andras caught me at #6 and we ran together through #8. Leaving 8, I was in the lead and had decided to take the left hand route along the stream - looked relatively simple. But I was sloppy with my map reading and headed up the wrong stream valley to the tune of a 7 minute error. Not the first time I've done this in Quantico terrain. I apparently haven't learned from my past transgressions. After #9, the rest of the course was smooth.

Perhaps mercifully, my GPS seems to have shut off a little before the error.

It was a fun weekend and my results were about as I expected. I need to do more orienteering if I want to avoid the sloppy mistakes. Thanks to QOC for all their efforts - it was a very well done event.

US Classic Champs - Green X course on Beaver Dam Run map. This was just about O-nirvana for me: beautiful open woods, able to run and read the map without worrying about tripping every other step, nice course... I had an almost clean run - lost about a minute on #7 when I was standing on the edge of the control circle but but could not see the control. My speed was a little slow partly due to conditioning and partly intentionally to avoid outrunning my navigation. Really enjoyed this course and terrain.
