XTERRA Big Elk Half Marathon - Had a good race - kept up the pace throughout and never had to walk (which is a credit to the course designer - they avoided some of the steeper stuff). The course kept us mostly in the woods - appropriate for a warm summer morning but that meant few of the expansive vistas that come with running through the fields. We spent the first 3 miles or so north of Rt. 273 then climbed to the easternmost overpass and stayed on the southern section for the remainder of the course. We were mostly on single track, frequently the super twisted mountain bike trails. There were aid stations at about 2 mile intervals, 6 in all. I drank water at 5 of them and used 3 gu's throughout the race. I was able to pass about 15 people on the 2nd half and was not passed by anyone else. One of the marathoners was just behind me for the last mile pushing my pace and encouraging me to finish strong. Felt like I still had plenty in the tank at the end. I was 34th overall, 2nd in M55-59 (the leader in my age group was about 6 minutes ahead). Overall, very pleased with this race. Another fine Adventure Geek production.
GPS keeps coming up short on these long runs. They said they wheeled the course multiple times. I'm guessing the GPS is doing some smoothing over all the twists and turns.
