Orienteering long 1:16:53 [4] *** 5.9 km (13:02 / km) +215m 11:01 / km

US Long Course Championships (Camp Wakpominee) - Green Y Course. Was feeling a bit bonky at the start after not getting much sleep last night (woke up at 3 am and couldn't get back to sleep) but I don't know that it had too much effect on my performance, which was mediocre. I was confused on 1 by the unmapped logging trail, losing a minute or two. On #2, I contoured through the logging debris - I think dropping down to the trail would have been quicker. Also went a bit past the control and had to come back for it. Could have done a better job leaving #2.

On the long leg 4-5, I opted for the righthand trail. It provided a good attack point and avoided some of the rock on the lefthand route. Going straight to me was not an option - that would have fried me both mentally and physically. Once I made my decision, I should have pressed hard to get to the trail. But I was sloppy, took forever to get to the trail and then wasn't sure where I hit it. This cost me more time. Was very happy to spike the approach to 5 at least. Tentative to 6, then pretty decent the rest of the way.

This was an excellent course, chock full of challenge at the beginning, nice runnable woods in the middle, then quick sprint-like stuff at the end. Really tested all your skills. Highlighted of course by the great long leg. This was the toughest course I've run in a while and a good measure of my conditioning (mental and physical, both of which need some work).

Thanks to EMPO for three truly championship-caliber events. Really enjoyed the weekend.

Orienteering race 51:04 [3] *** 3.4 km (15:01 / km) +155m 12:14 / km

US Middle Distance Championships (Moreau Lake State Park) - Green Y Course. I was relishing another opportunity to race in this great terrain but the course got the better of me today. My game plan was to take things slow and deliberate and maintain map contact at all times.

The plan worked well to #1 but then enroute to #2, I was having trouble counting off the marshes and ended up too far right. I corrected from the large cliffs but already a costly mistake with several minutes lost. I redoubled my efforts and was clean for the next 9 controls.

From the map, #12 looked to be one of the easier controls. A large marsh just beyond provided a can't-miss catching feature. I headed off on a beeline from 11 and things seemed to be fine until I got to where the flag should be. There was nothing in the area that looked like the dot knolls on the map. I dropped into the re-entrant beyond where the control should have been. Everything looked correct. Back up to the top of the hill to search for the flag and still nothing. Now I was questioning whether I was really where I thought I was. I expanded my search to no avail. Finally bailed to the tip of the large marsh and re-attacked. This time I was successful. I found the flag wedged into a tiny cranny and pushed down so it was touching the ground. The feature looked more like a pit than two dot knolls. I had passed right by it at least twice already but had not been able to see the flag. I really did not like this control selection. At least 7 minutes lost. My race was over. Finished rather PO'ed.

Orienteering race 17:31 [4] *** 2.3 km (7:37 / km) +65m 6:40 / km

US Sprint Championships (Camp Wakpominee Scout Camp) - Green Course. Basically a clean run with a few minor hesitations. Did not run with much speed though. A vast improvement over my West Point sprint races. Managed to keep my head together the whole time. Not a lot of route choice on the course. I'm questioning whether the trail/road to the left would have been a better route on 4-5 (I took the straight wooded route). Also went straight on 10-11 which I think was best.
