Orienteering race 1:11:49 [4] *** 5.5 km (13:03 / km) +220m 10:53 / km
spiked:8/12c shoes: VJ Integrator Spikes

Moreau Lake State Park, NY - US Classic Champs Day 1 Green X course. Like a lot of other people, I was a little taken aback when I flipped the map over and saw how incredibly detailed the terrain was. I was expecting pretty tricky stuff on the plateau but nothing quite like this. It was a championship caliber course on championship caliber terrain.

My run was pretty mediocre - done in by mental laziness (unforgiveable!) and a little bad luck. On the way from 2-3 I stepped over a fallen tree and a pine spike about 4" long and 0.5 inch diameter wedged under my shoe laces and between the tongue and upper of my shoe. Tried to free it without taking off my shoe but it wouldn't budge. So untaped and untied my laces and took the shoe off. All of this fumbling around cost me about 3 minutes. I made the mistake of opting for the trail route from 2-3. Which would have been ok if the trail was visible. But I never found it. Had to go very slow to confirm my location and navigate to 3 cleanly.

Worst mistake was #5 where I headed south trying to count off the marshes. I knew the key to the leg was to locate the large marsh north of the control but I drifted left and stupidly convinced myself I could correct when I approached the control. I found myself in the midst of a slew of small marshes unable to tell exactly where I was. Eventually turned right since I knew I was somewhere left of the control. Found it after a 5 min loss. Fairly clean (but slow) after that until 11 where I was right in the vicinity of the control but then veered left due to lack of confidence.

A disappointing run but still enjoyed the great terrain.

Orienteering race 19:56 [4] *** 2.6 km (7:40 / km)
spiked:10/12c shoes: VJ Integrator Spikes

Saratoga Spa State Park, NY - Sprint 1. Ran this at about 3/4 speed for fun. Light drizzle. Should have looked at the finish closer before starting - spent 5-10 secs looking for the punch box when I pulled into the finish. Didn't notice the boxes were holding up the banner labeled "Finish" - duh!

Would have been fun to run the 2nd to see the building section.

Trail Run 1:10:30 [3] 8.5 mi (8:18 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 10

Brandywine Creek SP - Long loop from the Hawk Watch lot. Down across the creek then climbing to the JCC. Along the ridge trail, back across the creek at Adams Dam Rd., up Maintenance Hill and around the open fields. Nice but warm. Passed a colleague from work running in the opposite direction over on what I thought was an obscure trail on the east side. Fortunately he didn't run into me about 30 seconds earlier when I was taking a bio break just off the trail.

Early morning run from home on the Corcoran Greenway along the Christina River. Included loops through Lewden-Green Park, Coventry Park, and a beat-up patch of woods off the powerline at the end of the greenway.
