West Point A-Event - Trophy Point Sprint (Red/Blue Course). The cachet of this event was the opportunity to orienteer on the West Point campus. I started out by over-running number 1 (found 2 first) and then settled down. It was slow going in the steep/rocky wooded section. By the time the real sprint started, my legs were nonresponsive. Only other mistake was not taking the parking garage tunnel. The run in from the last control featured a dramatic jaw-dropping view of the Hudson.

West Point A-Event - Middle distance race on the Victor Constant Ski Slope map (Red course). This was a tough course which demanded both power and precision. I was a little lacking in both departments. Had an interesting experience in the call-up line when I looked to my left and saw Mike Eglinski. Mike - you're running Blue? No, I'm running Red, he said. They had assigned us both the same start time! I let Mike go and waited for a slot about 5 minutes later.
I had spent some time studying the old Academy map which I had run on in 1994. As luck would have it, the first Red leg featured a similar route choice problem to one from the '94 Blue course. I took the middle route along the fence. But I am still intrigued by the flat, open lefthand route. I believe the left route through the fence crossing point may have been optimal. Pulled up a little early on 1, was a little right on 2, and then missed 3 to the tune of a couple minutes. Also lost about a minute at 8. Couldn't muster any speed until I left 9. 3rd in M-45 well behind Brautigam and Benedict Balter.
