Happy to have the shorter course on the second day..... haha, it was even more difficult than day 1.

First control, right down into light green. When I came out the other side I had drifted left, checked out a wrong control, then managed to get back on track to the correct one sort of by accident. Not into the map and having trouble matching up the rocks.

Reading better on the way to 2 - passed to the right of the curvy cliff, over one spur and there it was. To 3, actually went down over the big cliffs but first checked out wrong control on the small swamp.

Out to the small trail to 4, and actually took small trails the whole way around and attacked from where the trail crosses the little knoll N of the control. The white corridor was too risky for me, and I considered going up the swamp, but this didn't add much distance and made the control fairly trivial.

Back to the trail, over to the little islandish thing with two hilltops, then attacked through the swamp to 5. Back to the trail again, went to the dark green hilltop on the right, and went in through the green and little cliffs to 6.

Next out to the road, not my favorite thing but probably the most certain route for me. Ran hard through the guard rail pinch points. Then up the big trail to the ruin/ride, down the ride (old dirt roadbed) which actually continued through the green and then I could read the rocks and contours to 7.

Down to the little trail to where it crossed between two small cliffs, attacked 8 from there, couldn't see much in the green but knew I had to get to the other side of it.

Continued on the small trail and then up the big white hill to the SW and out to the trail where there was less dark green. From the trail followed the stream and swamp to 9.

Followed the stream and white woods until the last little saddle, popped over the top then and down across the little swamp to 10.

Went to the big trail, then changed my mind and crossed back over to the small trail and got 11 from that side.

Big trail to the island, felt like the mapping was kind of weird there, unexpected bridge, etc. Took small trail up to 12, then realized the trails were kind of pointless in here and just went south figuring I'd see the finger of land, which I did, and use that to find 13.

S on the trail again, took the little branch, angled off that to 14. No real go control this time, decent bit of trail to get over to the finish.

US Masters Nationals - Bigelow Hollow State Park - F40+ (GreenY)

Not feeling super confident going into this... I've hardly done any forest events this year, with the last one being Iron Hill a few weeks ago and before that West Point! All summer was mostly sprints. But national events are fun sooooo....

Kathy and I walked around a little bit of the model map and I was feeling even less confident about my ability to match things to the terrain. Right out of the gate I stuck to the trail, going up to the break in the stone wall with the ruin and then attacking 1. So far, so good.

To 2 I continued on the trail to give myself a little more practice with reading the nearby terrain. Then I took the trail to the left, then followed the line of steepness/cliffs. I found the little blobs of green quite useful here, especially the little wedge of medium green right before the control.

Out to the big trail and along the bottom of all the ridges, to the small trail junction, then up the hill into the boulders toward 3. Looked at the clue and saw 8 meter boulder... that made it easy. There was only one huge monster out there.

Next, climbed to the top and along between the spur and the cliffs. Started doubting myself as I approached 4 and backed up to check things and reattack. GPS shows I was right on line to the control, just didn't go far enough.

Up and over the top to 5. I was worried about this and considered taking a loooooong way around, but it ended up working out just fine.

Out to the big trail, to the water stop, then in and across the swamp and up the hill to 6 picking off features.

Down to the small trail, crossed the slightly bigger trail, continued to the dot knoll and used that to attack 7. Could be seen from pretty far off.

Stupidest mistake of the day on 8. I was out on the big trail and thought I'd just take it the rest of the way in, then decided to cut the corner instead. Somehow drifted off course in there and ended up between the two swamps to the south, but noticed it looked nothing like a trail and my compass was not right. Back up to the real trail and in to the finish.
