orienteering race 1:41:31 [4] *** 4.7 km (21:36 / km) +180m 18:08 / km
13c shoes: Inov8 O-roc 280 Red Threedux

DVOA Big Woods - Coventry Woods - Green Y (F40+)

Start to 1 - Down the trail, cut in after the marsh and kept it on the left

1 to 2 - Tried to go straight, ended up low, kept thinking it must be the next area of rock, saw about 5 controls all nearby, ended up at 11. Ooooops but then it was a bearing and a little climb to 2.

2 to 3 - Indistinct trail to the big trail, cut over to the skinny trail and climbed. Could see the control from a decent way out but kept getting distracted by this pile of cans.

3 to 4 - Ughhhhhhh. Slog up the hill. Went around the right side of all the rocks. Hit the trail at the top then realized I had another downhill section before the final trail. After all that ended up too far left at a wrong control before heading to mine.

4 to 5 to 6 - All straight, easy and close together.

6 to 7 - Back up the hill out of here, then down along the reentrant.

7 to 8 - Straight and through the edge of the thicket

8 to 9 - Straight, nice woods, enjoying the downhill.

9 to 10 - Straight and could see it from the trail

10 to 11 - Down to the lower trail, then south at the junction, cut across the rocks picking up the indistinct trail, then trail to the area with the old buildings/ruins and used those to attack.

11 to 12 - to the end of the stony ground and over to the control

12 to 13 to F- along the edge of the out of bounds to the road/trail, to the pavilion (which in my mind for some reason was a swimming pool even though it's not blue and I've been to that pavilion for a race in 2018 or 2019) and then streamers to the finish.

Better overall navigation than yesterday I think, but still far from perfect, and for some reason I felt a lot less dead at the end even though there was more climb.

DVOA Big Woods - French Creek North - Green Y (F40+)

Certainly not my best effort - I haven't been getting out as much as I did pre-2020, and many of the parks have been trail-heavy and not very technical. The navigation here definitely felt difficult, and I'm also not in great physical shape.

Start to 1 - Easy, right on the trail

1 to 2 - Should have cut the corner, but stayed on trails while getting into the map. Used the stony ground as an attackpoint and cut in to the control.

2 to 3 - This looked like a looooong leg with a whole lot of nothing, so I took the longer but more concrete route of the trail to the large trail/clearing up to the water tower and then attacked from the trail bend just above the tower. Saw a lot of people to my left but tried not to get drawn that way, and it worked out.

3 to 4 - Straight, keeping reentrant on left.

4 to 5 - Tried to go straight at it, was doing well as I passed above the large rocks, then for some inexplicable reason I veered hard left and hit the trail. Bounced back in from the trail and got it. I recall some thought process involving a pit but I honestly don't know what happened here.

5 to 6 - Straight, keeping rocky ground off to left.

6 to 7 - Straight over to the trail, and for some reason I thought I was significantly higher than I was. Then I was refusing to go over the hill like my compass wanted, thinking I needed to contour. Hit rocky ground, thinking this must be it, then looked down and saw a stream that definitely shouldn't have been there. I was wayyyyyyy low and had to go over to the next rocky ground and then climb a ton.

7 to 8 - Straight, checking off features

8 to 9 - Straight, got kind of muddled up in all the rock, but there were lots of people around and luckily funneled into it

9 to 10 - Should be easy, down to the trail junction, attacked, but then got drawn to a wrong control even though I could see it was on a rock. But not too far from the correct spot.

10 to 11 to F - Popped out into the campground, managed to run about 5 steps for Clint's camera. Down the road to the control and then the finish.

A little jaunt around Lancaster Central Park in the beautiful weather. I chose this park because there's been a lost dog sighted in the area for the past several days, so I kept my eyes open but didn't spot him.
