MASOC 32 - Photographer
9 AM

hiking 3:17:03 [2] 6.64 km (29:41 / km)

Walking around MASOC as photographer. Light rain in the beginning which then cleared up into a decent day. Went through tons of mud. As always, saw lots of interesting navigation techniques and heard some bizarre things from kids. My favorites were two boys who wanted to find a snake and make it bite them (I guess so they could quit?). Two sitting by the edge of the lake with one noting that there were plenty of crayfish they could build a fire and cook if necessary (finish in full view not too far around the water). A ton of kids crossing a wide stream/leg of the lake via logs, rocks, etc when a bridge was about 50 m downstream in the direction they needed to go anyway. Kid with a huge backpack full of.... stuffed animals. Two parents/leaders jokingly wondering if I would help them for 20 bucks. (Nope, but now I wonder how much I could make at this event ;-) )

I had cancelled my lesson as of last night, but was feeling somewhat better today so I decided to get outside a bit and do something light. Will continue to get extra rest and hopefully continue healing (especially because I don't want to miss another big race next weekend).

(sick)

So on Saturday evening when we were at dinner, what I thought was allergies suddenly exploded into a full-blown upper respiratory illness to the point where I couldn't breathe out of my nose at all. At that point I was still intending to go out on Sunday, even going to Target to get a new water resistant jacket to use for orienteering in the cold/rain since I hadn't brought my old one and it really needed replaced anyway.

Overnight I hardly slept and my sickness grew worse. At some point in the night I decided it might be a good idea to scratch, especially considering how difficult I knew the course would be and the 45 degree rainy weather.

So I didn't go out, and while that sucks I'm glad I didn't. I waited to cheer on everyone else, and by the time I drove home and got all my stuff in the house I was exhausted and very sick. I went to bed very early to get 11 hours of rest.

Taking a few days off now. I think I've pushed my body as far as it can go and this past week has been the result.
