OCIN Flying Pig XX Classic - Miami Whitewater Forest - Green A Course 9 (F35+)

Cooooooold morning. Luckily I had packed winter hat and gloves, and had extra gloves for Donna.

The beginning of this course was almost an exact duplicate of the end of yesterday's course, complete with same exact big hills. Got into new terrain around control 3, which gave me a brief moment of trouble (another one of those washboardy sections) but I figured it had to be just in the green and it was. The catching feature on this one was when an owl pokes your eyes out, so I was trying to be careful ;-) especially after yesterday's escapades.

Took the road on the long leg from 5 to 6. Some guy was walking and kept looking back at me. A cadet also ran by us. When I caught up to the guy he asked what kind of race this was so I gave the quick 15 second o-vangelism speech. The next several controls were bouncing back and forth across the road and all should have been easy. But I embarrassingly had a bit of trouble finding 7, despite locating both big depressions to the West of it and being right there in the large reentrant. The area just didn't look how I expected.

By 11-12-13 I was making small mistakes due to being tired. Luckily the end was simple - 15 was right on the road, and 16 and 17 were in more of that detailed stuff but right near the trails. Long time today, but I was tired and the amount of climb is more than I've done in a long while. Probably good practice for WP.

Bothered even less by the sciatica each day as the meet went on.

I was all excited to get into a new age class this year and legitimately run Green, but kind of disappointing to have no competition yet again.

Really fun Pig this year. I enjoyed all the maps, locations, and courses.

OCIN Flying Pig XX Classic - Miami Whitewater Forest - Green A Course 9 (F35+)

I was in great map contact the majority of the time and felt really good with controls coming up where I expected them. I was too far right coming up from 2 and misread the trail junction for a second, then saw the pond and figured out that I had to go along the stream to 3, then got a bit too high and saw the other depressions. Also took a minute to see 5 in that bit of washboardy terrain.

Frightening moment of the day occurred at 9. I had just dropped down into the control and was hearing a tree crack as it swayed in the wind. The cracks kept getting louder, in a way I didn't like, so I punched and got the heck out of dodge. As I left the control I could tell a tree was definitely about to fall, just not which one. I was running and looking back over my shoulder like in some kind of horror movie, trying to judge whether I'd be far enough away. The full size tree crashed down, in my direction, luckily not able to reach me. It made a huge cloud of dust and a puff of wind that smelled like rotten wood. Some guy was also approaching the control at the time and when he caught me asked if I'd seen it fall. Um... yeah. Too close for comfort.

Purposely went around to the right to 11 to avoid green in the much greener East side of the road. Long leg to 14 actually pretty trivial... just passed back close to start and followed trail/ridge top almost duplicating my routes from S-2.

Mostly slowed down by climb, especially from 15-finish where there was really no choice but to go up and down several large hills.

In the evening we went out to dinner in Harrison, then returned to find our hotel had no power, which was another adventure. Many people were leaving, but luckily it came back on around 9:30 or so. (We were already in bed because it was pitch black and cold and what else are you going to do.)

OCIN Flying Pig XX Sprint - Miami University Hamilton Campus - Red Course 12 (F-21+)

Placed 2nd in F-21+... probably the only time that will ever happen. Because there were only three people ;-)

Took about 2 controls to get into the mapping in the scrubby forest area. I figured out pretty quickly that the green wasn't too bad and it was easy to pop through it for short distances. The section with all the long depressions was interesting and weird. No problems finding anything, and the bit around the campus at the end was cool. Wish the conservatory had been open to visit after the race, but it closed at 1.

Thought my leg problems would slow me down this weekend, but not really. It sometimes hurt when stepping or landing certain ways, but the pain doesn't make me lame. Running actually helps.

Sprints are my favorite. So much fun!

I'm pretty sure what I thought was a tight calf muscle is actually sciatic nerve pain. Unless my calf suddenly goes all the way up to my butt. It seems to actually be relieved after exercise or sleep, worse after sitting. The feeling is more sharp and pinchy than muscle pain would be. I don't know exactly how to describe it.

Manheim Township Park

This place has a big hill on a small loop and I think I ran up that sucker about 6 times. Very slow.

New scale confirms that old scale was losing its mind.
