DVOA Chasing the Star - Star Village Long Course - Green Y (F-Green)

Quite surprised that this turned out to be my best effort of the weekend. I felt extremely sluggish but suppose that was not actually the case. Navigation seemed very easy, pretty clean to everything except 8 when I hit the cairn first and had to move down the stony ground to the boulder. I was very surprised when I looked at my watch near the end of the course and saw that I was only a bit over an hour. I did take one nasty fall on the way to 6 - tweaked my left ankle and probably would have had a bad sprain if not for the brace. Fell downhill hard on my right side, but amazingly did not even get scratched up. Seems like I heard of/saw a lot of people fall or finish with wounds and injuries.

Too much time spent hanging out in the open field after finishing -- I have bright red sunburned lobster feet. In a square pattern thanks to my sandals.

DVOA Chasing the Star - Hickory Run Sand Spring Lake Middle Distance - Green Y (F-Green)

Hickory Run and I have a long, notorious, and ugly history, so I was quite pleased with how I did today. Wobbled a bit on the way to 1 -- was too far left, already felt the panic coming on, popped over to the right and there it was. Started to feel the map a lot better after that. Remembered many lessons learned in the course walk here last summer with Eric W. and even recognized some of the terrain. Very clean through the rest of the course -- I was extremely pleased to feel in contact and in control for the entire time after the first control.

DVOA Chasing the Star - Lehigh University Sprint - Red (F-21+)

Started out fast -- no issues through first 6. Really tiring after that -- I always tend to go out too quickly and the tank goes dry really fast. Lost time on 14 -- ended up going around the building on the right, then was confused when there were no manmade objects, then realized they were ABOVE... I hadn't done a sprint yet where different levels of buildings came into play. So I need to practice reading that type of map. Same issue with 15, I completely missed the opening for the stairwell to go up. I ended up running around the much larger plaza type area near the finish... very confused... of course where everyone could see :-) Finally got my head screwed back on straight and finished up with no more problems. My pace for this was slower than I would have liked, though the 2 large errors may account for most of that. I need to learn to pace myself better in shorter races so I have more energy throughout. Also to concentrate and *read* the map even when I'm near the end and tired.

horseback riding (english) 1:00:00 [3]

Lesson on William. W/T/C, then down into the pasture where we jumped some XC and natural type jumps that are set up for the Sally Cousins clinic tomorrow. It was windy and all the horses were getting pretty strong so we did a few down there and then went back into the ring and jumped 2 courses.
