Trail Run warm up/down 15:00 [1]
shoes: Integrators 2005

Warm-up and cooldown for the Valley Goat. Feeling great.

Orienteering race 1:35:06 [4] *** 14.27 km (6:40 / km) +775m 5:14 / km
spiked:21/30c shoes: Integrators 2005

The Valley Goat III. Felt great starting out, and tried taking the lead to see if I could push the pace but a small error on 2 had me playing catchup for a couple controls and a silly route to 5 extended my catchup time. I finally started to pull ahead again at 7 and was just getting ready to try to make a break when the control wasn't there and so the whole group caught up again before we all decided that we were right and the control was missing.

Tried to pull ahead again, but was foiled again by the course when 11 was on one side of the map and 12 was on the other side but there was no way to figure out where they were in relation to each other short of tracking each one down on the other side of the map. Vadim and Wyatt passed me up as I stood there trying to figure it out so I just settled in behind them and followed them in to 12 where I was able to get a grip on where I was.

It was a tough fight on the next few controls and Vadim and Wyatt were both looking really strong. I finally started to pull ahead going to 19 and managed to hold my lead after that.

It was great to feel strong at the end of a long race like this. Either all the training has been working a little bit or that Gu I ate at control 18 did wonders. I've never really finished a long race like this without getting really tired and doing something stupid at the end so I took it fairly cautious when I realized I had a big enough lead to not have to worry too much about the rest of the guys.

I don't think we had the fastest pace today but it was definitely a good solid run and a great way to jump into the season. I had several small bobbles going into some controls but I managed to avoid any errors that could have ruined my chances to win so I'm happy with that. Best of all though was to feel so strong in a race like this. Hopefully it's a glimpse of good things to come.

Cross-Training (Basketball) 20:00 [3]

Some intramural basketball when I got back to school in the evening. My team was supposed to have 2 games but both opposing teams didn't show up so we didn't get to play. I got to play about half a game with another team though so that was good. Feeling tired but not too bad.

Time to get back in the swing of things and get some more good mileage in before the big races start.

Trail Run warm up/down 8:00 [1] 11.5 mi (42 / mi)
shoes: Asics (12/06)

Easy jog down to school for the local meet.

Orienteering race 13:11 [4] 3.1 km (4:15 / km)
shoes: Asics (12/06)

A nice brown course set up by Erin at my old High School. It was pretty cool to run around my community on a real course that someone else had set.

I felt a little out of breath the whole time though almost like I do when I am on a track. I also felt like I do when it just starts to get cold for the first time in the Fall. Perhaps when it warms up like this in the Spring it has the same effect on your lungs. I have never noticed it before in the Spring but I definitely noticed it today. Felt good otherwise and I was probably just feeling winded because I was running faster than I thought. I just didn't notice it because the course was so easy.

Erin beat me by a minute and I did lose about 20 seconds on the course so I couldn't have been that slow since Erin knew the course perfectly before he started. Still, it was a weird day.
