Green course (Sunday) at Pawtuckaway for UNO's camping weekend.
Pretty tough course, and long (5.8km beeline, not counting the uncrossable pond detour)
Compared to my effort last year (and first time at Pawtuckaway) this was much improved! Just one major mistake (~10 mins) and a few minor ones where I got off line but recovered easily enough. Last year the course was less than 5km, likely technically easier, yet I made two huge mistakes wasting 45+ minutes in total and several other minor ones. Pawtuckaway is fun!
The first 6 controls were just fine, on the 'regular' part of the map, lots of details to keep your route if you take your time.
6-7 took us on to 'Big Island' which is relatively devoid of detail. After crossing on to the island, I got off line too far north (downhill) but caught a big section of stony ground which was more prominent than I had anticipated. Followed it to within 200m then shot to it. Lots of people around at this point, both along the way and at the flag, which was also on red and blue.
The only big mistake was 7-8, I somehow 180ed (actually, 90ed) while trying to follow the marshes as a handrail. I walked for about 5 minutes while keeping my compass needle's magnetic north oriented with the map's magnetic south. Ugh. I did find a nice big boulder and someone else who was confused, who was taking with herself.
Leg 8-9 was probably the most challenging, about 700m of compass shot over vague terrain. I 'chickened out' and went parallel to the Lake (about 100-200m off, lake visible the whole time) until I caught the campground road and attacked from the road corner, about 200m away
After that, pretty easy!
