Green "Regular/Request" at Pawtuckaway, straight line 4.2 km with "some" climb, which really wasn't bad at all.
Much like my short jaunt on the permanent-o last week at Hickory Run, I can mess up big time in very technical terrain, but this time I messed up
with my compass.
First: I messed up waypoints on my GPS track -- anyone know an easy way to add/move them?
Forgot to start tracking till almost to #1 then forgot to mark #5, then made two at #8 to get me back on track.
#1 -- short leg, overshot and looked at another boulder pair to the NE
#2 -- used top of hill as a handrail to the ponds then went in, no problem
#3 -- contour detail is so wonderful and accurate easy enough to follow a straight line here
#4 -- started off OK then went all crazy, eventually got to the small wiggly trail but mislocated myself. Walked along for a bit then turned north into a wonderful land of small marshes and large rocks, which was not the correct region of small marhes and large rocks. Eventually relocated/stumbled on the W side of the large uncrossable marsh then made my way around. Probably 20 mins lost here.
#5 Intended to go S around Genial Pond but made a small error and followed the string of ponds and marshes to the N and was caught by the stone wall; truned around and rest was fine.
#6 Route choice and execution was fine but the clue was wrong! The given clue was "reentrant" but the damn detail in the circle is so complicated I couldn't tell for sure there wasn't one there. I circled around back to the marshes and made sure I was in the right place. Yup. Punched the "wrong" number 148 as a boulder on the top of a hill/spur. Lost 11 mins here.
#7 Easy, follow the ridge line on the west side.
#8 No problem, followed the green marsh S on its west side then crossed where all the little water features come together at one point, attacked W from there.
#9 Another stupid compass error. Intended to swing a bit south to see the green marsh then W to the squiggly trail. Instead kept walking S and hit the large trail. Stupid. Went OK after that, used the cluster of 3 or 4 boulders spanning the trail as an attack point.
#10 Went straight for it, no trail, no problem.
#11 Last marker. I have no clue WTF I did. Wound up 180ing, and somehow crossed the squiggly trail without noticing. At one point I was convinced I was about 100m S of #10 on the north side of the U shaped marsh... wound up wandering around and stumbled back on #8!!! Probably Another 25mins lost here.
Finish - followed the reentrant in, didn't mess this up too much...
