Bike 1:58:23 [3] 49.29 km (25.0 kph) +219m

Down to Blue Creek and back on my own, then once more with Sam. I love going through Wagon Wheel Gap.

It was 27F at 0640. I waited until 0740 to head out and if I was in the sun it wasn't bad. Hitting the shade of Wagon Wheel Gap was a wall of cold air -- probably still in the mid 30s. All 20 of my digits got a little chilly. By the time I returned with Sam the temp had risen to "cool." Figured I should enjoy all of it because Dallas is entering the season of Super-Summer a touch earlier than usual.

Bike 1:36:20 [3] 31.96 km (19.9 kph) +136m

Easy ride with Sam. Parked in Del Norte, started off with one plan, changed our mind, ended up with a better route. No cars and great scenery. Body has recovered well -- at least enough for an easy "stroll" type ride.

Strava segments

PMS to Wolf Creek Pass
2017 = 2:04:--
2018 = 2:09:38

Wolf Creek Pass (from Pagosa Springs)
2017 = 1:05:--
2018 = 1:02:47

US 160 Climb
2018 = 1:02:48 (Moving time = 49:10 the difference due to my breaks in the last 3-4km)

Max speed = 82.1kph
Min speed = almost tipping over

* Left Creede at 0610. After a pit stop and getting ready I was finally riding at 0735.
* Chillier this year. Probably mid 40s in Pagosa Springs when I left. It was sunny enough heading out that only my fingers got a little chilly. However, by the time I started climbing, the slopes had clouded over. Even still, I was sweating buckets. When I got to the pass it was cloudy, windy and still only mid 40s; that was less than comfy.
* Like last year I kept the effort mellow heading out. Monitored my HR. Took a short break at Treasure Falls and started the climb.
* Most of the time my gear was front 36, rear 32. HR stayed around 150ish.
* No break at the overlook and kept at it. I wasn't counting the km's as much as I was last year. I knew generally how much time was left to go but wasn't stressing. Just kept at it. As mentioned above, I was sweating buckets and working pretty hard. However, I felt my effort was under control and I wasn't digging too much.
* At the top, filled my bottles from the gallon I had stashed, peed, ate a cliff bar, took a photo, and got moving again. It was too chilly to hang out.
* Heading down to the WC Ski area 3 Harley's passed me. However, I got up a head of steam and passed them back. HA! I got over 80kph 5 times with a max of 82.3. To get over 75 I really need to get low but then my neck gets really tired trying to hold my head up to see. That's why there are the repeated spikes then lulls in the speed. I don't know how the pros can maintain their tuck they way they do.
* Took a brief breather at Rt 410 and started back up. Felt ok up to about Pass Lake and then the slope kicks up and then I did not feel so happy. Oddly,I wasn't sweating on this climb like the first one. Maybe I got too chilled -- dunno. With about 4km to go I started feeling a little off -- a little light headed. Eventually I decided it would be prudent to take a little break, catch my wind, and let my system calm down. Go again. Again need a break. Told myself not to stress, take as much time as I need, I'll get there. It wasn't all that fun though.
* I was very happy to make it to the top. It didn't seem quite so chilly or maybe it was just that I wasn't so wet. Again, fill bottles, pee, eat a cliff bar, take a couple of photos.
* Recovered enough to start cranking the downhill. Alas, there was a stupid headwind and it was impossible to get much above 75kph. Still, I pulled into the left lane and passed two trucks. HA!
* It was much warmer down low and that felt good. Usually, warm does not feel good to me; I really must have become too chilled.
* Cruised the way home feeling decent on the flats and little downs and cursing the little climbs.
* Ate lunch at Riff Raff Brewhouse and revived a little. Took until about 6pm before I perked up again.

Bike 49:21 [3] 20.75 km (25.2 kph) +122m

Arrived at Wason Ranch about 1:30. Assembled bike and went for a short ride to make sure everything was working. Sam joined me for the first half. Feel decent enough but another night's sleep will be beneficial.

Orienteering 1:50:00 [3]

Red long = 9.3k, 370 Cm = 1:44

Pretty happy with my nav. I messed up C7 on the final approach. I was close but at the last moment had a brain fart, misplaced myself on the map, then stupidly ran down the other side of the mountain a bit. Luckily I figured it out or it could have been worse the 5min. C11 I wasn't paying attention and climbed about 3 extra contours only to get to the ride and run downhill. But other than that, I was close to spot on. Of course there was often slowing in the control to circle to figure thinks out -- they weren't all high speed spikes. Nevertheless, good nav and that was fun. My physical effort was measured; I did not want to dig deep at all, just run steady. Walked most of the uphills. Nevertheless, still tired. Hopefully I will recover quickly and my cycling muscles will be in good shape. We'll see.

All and all, an excellent weekend. Really enjoyed the nav challenges. These are great locations and the organizers did a great job all around.

Orienteering 55:00 [3]

Relay, leg 1. Leg 2 = Lisa and Leg 3 = Amy Louden from QOC

Finished in 40:51 with 39:51 in errors, or it seemed like it.

Nice and cool today with some occasional sprinkles. Alas, that meant clouds and a dark woods. Man did I have trouble reading the map. That led to lots of hesitations and a few mistakes.

Enough bitching though. Had fun. At the start a good number of folks took off while I was still trying to find the start triangle. Me and about a half dozen others had a big error on C2. After crossing the creek I drifted right and was exploring the wrong set of rocks. After that I was just making my way around doing the best I could. Spent the middle part course with khall. Spent C2 through the finish with a junior who was faster than me in the woods but was missing more than me. We eventually came together again for the last two controls and sprinted in together -- it was fun to run fast.

Orienteering 1:15:00 [3]

Westchester County Challenge
Westmorland Sanctuary
Middle Red = 4.4km, 220 Cm

Very fun. Very slow.

I could make a list of reasons but it's not important; suffice to say, I moving slow and my eyes and brain couldn't handle running faster anyway. That said, I'm kind of please how I did nav wise; I haven't run in this type of terrain in a long time.

Annoyingly warm and humid. Looking forward to better weather tomorrow.

C1) Thought I was careful and was going to spike it. Nope. Missed running about 100m too far.
C2) Slow getting to the trail due to footing but nav fine.
C3) Read the various rock lines, then the wall, then to bag.
C4) Ok
C5) Slow to figure out trails and wall. Some Junior girl passed me en route but I was more precise in the circle and punched ahead of her. She stayed not too far behind all the way to C12 but then I lost her.
C6) Ok
C7) Though I was right on but I came off the trail too low and then searched lower. Saw the marsh below and realized I had to go back up. Picked up ajospe in additional to SJG mentioned above.
C8) Picking my way over with Alex.
C9) The vegetation was a little thick and I got nervous. Started walking because I thought I had missed. Alex come through and spotted the bag.
C10) Pieced together the trails and did a good job of reading the detail in the circle.
C11) Drifted left exiting C10 but the stone wall helped to reorient me.
C12) Ok
C13) Slow walk because my brain wasn't processing the map.
C14) Ok. Got to the trail then contoured from the bend.
C15) Missed a little to the right at first but corrected quickly.
C16) BorisGr passed me and then we cut right on a trail. I was not sure about this and then realized nope, had to go up.
F) Grind it out.

Not sure I like the coated paper. It's nice not to have a bag and the ink didn't flake. However, there was some layer separation at folds. Also, drawing my route on the map did not work well; I suppose that is too old school though and I'm suppose to be overlaying a GPS track electronically.

We went to Mt Kisco for lunch at a Greek place. Then we took a back way back to the hotel staying off the interstate. Watch the Prefontaine Classic back at the hotel.

Eventually headed out again for a driving tour of Candlerock Lake and then Frank Pepe's Pizzeria that the billboard said was voted the best pizza in the world. It was good.
