Orienteering 1:10:00 [3]

Middle, Red, 4.5k 250m 22C, 47:55, 8/35

A very physically demanding middle with a lot of climb, though the veg was better behaved the yesterday. A lot of short legs reduced the difficulty a bit. Nevertheless, I was pretty pleased to have a mostly clean race. I got a little off track on the way to 2. Then to 19 I went up and over but probably around on the trail was quicker. But these were small booboos. Middles are often my nemesis and so I was happy not to have any big errors. Interestingly, my legs felt the best of all three days. Another cold day at the start (25F) but it warmed up to probably 40F by awards time.

Overall, Carter Caves is probably my favorite OCIN map. Overall, my nav was decent and my legs were running well given the amount of running I don't do. Overall, enjoyed the orienteering a lot this weekend.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [3]

Long, Red, 9.3k 420m 15c, 1:43:59, 11/37

Ugh. That was hard work. I would have been happy to quit at 8 when we were near the finish. On the other hand, then I would have missed the run to C11 underneath the big cliffs. It was hard work but I thought it was cool. I lost time on C5, C6 and C11 for what AP says is a total of about 6min. The first two were just compass and contour errors and on C11 I was rushing. Otherwise, I felt pretty good about the race. My legs were heavy but my calf likes terrain running better than roads and side walks and didn't bother me. My legs took some good hits from greenbriar -- par for OCIN. Chilly 32F at the start but I was fine running. Overall, a good day.

Orienteering 45:00 [3]

Flying Pig: US Champs

Sprint, Red, 3.2k 80m 23, 23:01, 5/33

Not the prettiest campus but it sure was good for a sprint. Lots of alleys, buildings and stairs. Had a lot of fun. My concentration was pretty solid; I was almost always on task and trying to read ahead. I only made one mistake for about 20s when on the way to C18 I started down a dead end alley; perhaps a couple small route choice errors but I'm not going to sweat those. My calf was good for about half the race then was a bit tight; my speed was about 90% to protect it. Even at 100% I'm not so quick these days so I was pretty surprised by my result relative to the field.

Row 1:20:00 [3]

6 x 1min w/ random rest and then 4 x P10 at high SR. South wind day. Grumpy. Legs heavy. Calf tight. Nevertheless, I was in a better mood by the end; thank you endorphins.
