Orienteering 2:30:00 [3]

Team Trials Long @ BAOC Boggs Mtn

* I confess that the advertised climb intimidated me a bit. But my legs felt ok warming up and so I headed away from the start in good spirits.
* Very clean navigation throughout. I had one slight miss at the C15 rootstock but otherwise I generally came to the bag just as planned.
* I don't know if my routes were optimal but I planned as best I could and even paused at times to make sure I wasn't missing something obviously better. I executed all my routes as planned.
* The results indicated I wasn't moving too fast but I finish tired feeling like I had done the best I could.
* Last spring I physically crashed on all of my A meet long courses. This made me a little gun shy this spring. However, while I wasn't blazing fast, each of my A meet longs (Ran-it Granite, West Point & the trails) were at least average and I finished still running reasonably enough. I'll call that a victory.

Team Trials Middle @ BAOC Cobb Mtn

From surprised happy to surprisingly depressing.

* I was calm not thinking about yesterday or anticipating results. I was focused on executing each control one at a time.
* I was patient out of the start and made sure I headed downhill with a plan. Then the trail came up a lot sooner than expected and when I got to the reentrant where I control was on a spur at the bottom I was nervous. I thought I should be able to see the spur but couldn't. Went back to the trail junctions and made sure I knew exactly where I was before going back to where I had been and heading down.
* Got myself back on track for C2 and C3 reading the map and making plans.
* Proceeded to bomb C4 and C5 by misreading contours and elevation. Knew my race was over at this point. Worked on focusing and navigating as best I could for the rest of the race but I was physically deflated.
* I thought it was a good course and fun. I enjoyed the loop of short technical legs from C11 on.

Thoughts on the bombs:
* I was studying the map and terrain with tunnel vision. As soon as things didn't match up I was confused.
* Perhaps my inexperience with BAOC terrain played a role (this was my first time out here).

Orienteering 50:00 [3]

Team Trials Sprint @ BAOC Spring Lake

* Rainy but warm enough.
* Legs felt good such that I could concentrate on navigating.
* I had studied this map imagining controls at cliffs, pits and other more intimidating features. When we got a lot of picnic tables it felt easy.
* A bit nervous heading off the trail to C4 hoping that I read the clearing properly. A brief hesitation at C11 when there was a truck parked on the little road island I plan to use as a check off feature.
* Gerald was around for most of the course taking somewhat parallel routes. I pretty much ignored him and made sure I planned and executed my plan. I did benefit from Gerald's go control miss such that I was able to avoid the same.
* Finished happy with my race but then quite surprised at my ultimate placing. I think that the course played to my strengths, easy nav. w/o a lot of climb.
