Orienteering 1:50:00 [3]

West Point Long: 1:42:31. 10.4 km w/ 435 Cm = 9:51 / km

* Sore body and fitful sleep motivated a conservative start. I started having more confidence I wouldn't crash around C11-C12. Started to pick up the pace a bit on the way to C17. Had good energy into the finish. I guess I should have pushed harder earlier but as they say about hindsight... Cooler temps helped *a lot*.
* Lost some time on route to C3 but luckily my error/confusion was in the direction of the control so that I relocated and kept going. Otherwise, some brief button hooks and pauses in the control circle but nothing major.
* After my big loss on yesterday's middle I was extra cautious today on C10 and C11. On C10 I went to the small cliff below the big cliffs high to the right above the control so that I would have a solid attackpoint. Turned out that coming from high I was able to glimpse the control from the lower cliff en route.
* I did a decent job of planning ahead and visualizing the map throughout.

Overall, while the weekend didn't have any spectacular results they weren't bad. This is my third time at WP and my best navigating. Maybe I'm getting better at reading this terrain or maybe the new map made a difference. Maybe both. Now I need to try to pick up the running pace.

Orienteering 1:40:00 [3]

Sprint at West Point Campus: 18:56. 2.56 km w/ 105 Cm = 7:24 / km

Fun race but I was very confused in the beginning. After C1 I hit a dirt trail, the continuation of the iniitial paved trail, and excepted to see black dashes on the map. It didn't sink in that on a sprint map a heavily used trail could be tan with black dashes and I didn't fathom that it was the continuation of the paved trail. I had a lot of pauses, hesitations and misdirections. Anyway, I finally settled down from C6 to C7, caught back up to Greg B. who had passed me earlier, and snuck ahead on the climb to C11. After that, in the campus portion I was moving decently enough. I don't know if my routes were always optimal but they were at least Ok and I didn't lose any significant time.

Middle distance at West Point: 49:23. 4.92 km w/ 175 Cm = 10:02/km

Contoured to C1. I'm pretty sure that staying low on the flatter slope was faster. But I got there without error. However, I bungled the final approach to C2 and got lost in the green -- we'll see how much it cost me, 5 min? After that my nav. was pretty clean albiet slow. Sloppy on the slope to C12 but otherwise I was visualizing the map and in control. It was fun to run across snow.

The most beat up I've been in a long time. I slipped on a rock during my wanderings in the first part of the sprint and got scraped up. During the middle I fell on the way down a rocky slope, got banged up, and hurt my left hand and a couple of fingers.

Run 30:00 [3]

Today I was running around Lake Highlands North Park with a frown, wondering why my legs felt heavy and thinking about boulders, route choices and climb. Ahead was a toddler soccer practice that Lisa refers to as magnet ball because they all run around in a little swarm about the ball. As I ran by the soccer field one little girl spotted me and broke out laughing. I assume this was because I was without a shirt; it sometimes happens that I hear small kids say something to the effect of "Mommy, that man's naked!" But my streaking days are well behind me and I always have at least shoes, socks and shorts. So, as the little girl is laughing I point at her and give a big hardy laugh back at her. This catches the attention of more little girls who start laughing. So I point at them and give them a big "HA! HA! HA! HA!" By now the parents have started to clue in, some smiling, some chuckling, and some probably wondering why that man is running naked in front of their children. After another round of "HA! HA! HA!" I ran away and could still here all of the little kids breaking out in laughter.

Kind of puts things in perspective. No more frowning.
