HVO Hudson Highlander X.
26.2 km on the line.
Rough estimate of my route was 29km with 1200m of climb on my route.
Mid 60s at start and ~80 by afternoon. Too warm for me to race in and I paid the price.
Note
Generally happy with navigation. My goal was to make sure I was navigating; there is not much point to coming all of the way to Harriman and just follow. In a mass start race like this it is almost impossible not to benefit from others. On Surebridge, I wouldn't have been able to go as fast on my own. But overall, I had enough successes that am satisfied.
However, I made two big mistakes that tanked my result:
* Did not drink enough. I carried bottles but did not drink enough in addition. I am used to running through aid stations when I carry. But for this long a race that was not enough. Pretty stupid.
* Did not take care of my feet. Should have had laces a bit tighter near toes and should have taped bottoms of feet. Probably should have stopped to care for them early on. But then I would have lost contact. And even fresh it is not a guarantee I would catch back up. So I gambled and tried to keep running. Lost the bet.
On the positive side:
* My longest ever O race.
* Most climb I've ever done in a race.
* The last A meet at Harriman in Spring 2004 was my first time at Harriman. At the timeI felt pretty intimidated by the Sebago map. Now after having been there a couple of times, and after running on Surebridge, Sebago seems much more manageable.
