orienteering 54:27 [3]

COC long course; 2nd in W55

Fun, fun map. Not a particularly stellar run but again no major problems. Had a lot of trouble sorting out the mapping on the first leg so was very, very slow just trying to make sense of it all but eventually did and then things went well. I didn't see a trail option about halfway through the course so lost some time there and had a few other hesitations and places where I could have saved some time. Only 3 minutes out of first so rather pleased with that since W55 is a pretty competitive group these days!

orienteering 28:29 [3]

COC middle course. No big errors but not particularly fast. Winner was about 22 minutes. Lots of people were faster than me on most splits but then had a big problem somewhere so I ended up 3rd. The course was a little disappointing as the best route on all but one or two legs was out to the trail, run the trails, in to the control, and the other leg was just go straight through the nose high grass since around made no sense.

Note

It was so cold today at work that I can't make myself turn on the AC just yet. The heat feels wonderful. Maybe I'll change my mind when I try to go to sleep...

map hiking 3:20:00 [3]

HR course setting stuff.

I looked at the weather reports on Friday and I swear it said both Saturday and Sunday were going to be mid 70s and partly cloudy. So I decided that Sunday worked better for HR. So I watched the WOC relays and then headed on north despite the overcast skies. It started pouring on the drive up but for some reason it never occurred to me to turn around. It was raining but not hard when I got there and I decided to head on out. I keep several 99 cent rain ponchos in my car and put one on and was fine. It rained off and on the whole time but never poured and I actually had a marvelous time. Never got my compass out, just sort of wandered and read the terrain only messing up a few times.

The highlight was getting a phone call while at one of the control sites. I was pleased that I got reception - I was on pretty high stuff not down in a valley so not too surprising but I wasn't sure where in the park you can get reception. But it took several minutes to dig my phone out of my pack, and then I still have no clue that a certain sequence of beeps means that while I am calling someone, someone else or in fact that person, is calling me and that I can do something to pick up. One of these days I'll figure that out.

Spent some time going back and forth through some high blueberry bushes and hummocky terrain just to get that WOC-like feeling. :) But I was just walking so not terribly taxing.

The long courses are shaping up nicely and one or two more visits will have everything nailed down. I'll be curious to see how long it will take me to place all the stakes for the stands as that will help determine how long it will take to put out the controls and then do the morning-of vetting.

I'm still smiling at how much I enjoyed myself today despite the rain.
