Hiking 2:00:00 [3] 2.0 mi (1:00:00 / mi)
weight:166lbs

Hike up off the property tracing an old but existing easement for logging access. Neighbor received a demand for use of the access by land owner over the top of the ridge. Has been logging and now apparently wants to bring trucks down our side of the hill to the highway. Shortest route drops down beyond our land and beyond the ski trails. However, another old easement came with our property which runs right down Stairway to Heaven. That possibility would rip up a half mile of ski trail and go past our house 5’ from the garage.

Interesting development regarding property rights.

Hiked with the weight vest for the first time in a long while. Just had one sand bag inserted, maybe 4 lbs. Will add one a week for some climbing resistance.

Skate Ski warm up/down 57:00 [2] 3.06 km (18:38 / km) +24m 17:55 / km
ahr:96 max:143

Checking out conditions. Snow frozen overnight.

Skate Ski race (Biathlon Nationals) 52:33 [3] 7.0 km (7:30 / km)

Pursuit race. 5 ski laps, four stops to shoot. Combed frozen surface. Better than slush, could bite on the downhills and turns. They tempered some of the climbs for the Masters by inserting some cutoffs. All-in-all okay, except I went out next to absolutely last of 200 racers and by then snow berm had built up and temperature rose well above freezing. Was able to hold the turns and not be terrified, just a bit scared.

Yesterday's guys were beat up pretty badly and didn't race today. Another did show up so I had a competitor in the class. He started 5 seconds after me and never stayed close.

Shooting was mixed with 3 and 2 prone hits and then 3 hits standing but none on the last bout. So lots of penalty laps, but was able to keep ahead since the other guy missed even more.

Win in the Pursuit added to yesterday's in the Sprint. Nice tough weekend at the Nationals.

Skate Ski race (Biathlon Champs) 57:12 [3] 7.2 km (7:57 / km) +175m 7:05 / km

US Biathlon Championships, Mt Van Hoevenberg sprint race. 3 laps with prone and standing shooting. Was helping Ed bury timing sensor lines and ended up late to zero. Just got one magazine fired before range was closed, so really didn’t get sight locked in with the wind conditions. Shooting was poor with 4 misses in each lap.

Skiing was really tough and dangerous with 2-4” slush on the downhills. Really piled up by the time our class went off. Each lap was 2 km with 4 steep climbs and descents. Caught up to the guy 30 sec ahead of me and he fell on the first drop down into the slush. I hung on for all but the last where I wiped out going down into the stadium for the finish. Not the hardest hill, but just got caught by the deep slush.

Not an enjoyable race at all, but managed to win the class by almost 3 minutes.

Skate Ski (Biathlon ) 45:00 [3] 4.0 km (11:15 / km)

Training day at Mt Van Hoevenberg. Rain last night, blustery wind today. Zeroed first thing when it was just breezy, then wind picked up and took 7 clicks when I shot on metal, hit all 5 prone. Two km loop is all climb or fast descent. Forecast to stay above freezing tonight so it won’t turn into glare ice.
Helping Ed set up timing at 6 AM tomorrow, then zero again and race the US Champs.
