Note

Let my neighbor cut thru the glade and a corner of the main trail on his snowmobile so he could sled around another neighbor's land on the other side of the hill. Told him this was an experiment to see if the trails could take it. Unfortunately, tore up the thin cover and exposed a 100m section of ice. Will take a lot of shoveling to cover the damage. Got 20 kids coming in 2 weeks and they won't be able to handle the ice. Next time, he'll have to cut thru the trees and stay on his property.
10 AM

Hiking (Grafton soapstone quarry) 3:00:00 [2] 7.1 mi (25:21 / mi) +738m 19:10 / mi

On the trails behind Grafton Ponds into the soapstone quarries, and then looped aroundup over Bear Hill. Easy hike with Art and Gretchen. On kahtoolas the whole way, good thing as the trails had many sections of glare water ice.

8 AM

Skate Ski warm up/down (Craftsbury) 25:00 [2] 2.78 km (9:00 / km) +13m 8:48 / km
ahr:114 max:137

Testing wax. Used 5 layers of Swix recommendation VR45, but had no kick. Added a couple layers of VR50 and that felt okay.
9 AM

Skate Ski race (Half marathon) 2:06:55 [4] 25.34 km (5:00 / km) +428m 4:37 / km
ahr:147 max:165

Decided I could do the half even after a week of racing in Europe. How hard can 25 km be?

Wax started okay, but was gone after a few km. Lots of double poling and no real problem until the hill up Ruthies. Fought up that, down the other side, and before the climb back up to the center I stopped for a couple minutes and globbed on more VR50. That was fair for most of the lap. Before going up Ruthies again I switched skis L/R to get the wax to the inside edge. That worked enough to help on the climbs.

Definitely should have had klister under everything, maybe purple given the temp in the 20's. Track was glazed and hard and abraded the soft kick wax rapidly. Forecast had been for a couple inches of snow during the morning, but that never materialized.

My classic skis are maybe 15 years old and very stiff. They do work at times, but the wax and conditions have to be just right. Maybe finally time to buy a new pair.

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley) 35:00 [3] 5.5 km (6:22 / km) +105m 5:49 / km
ahr:88 max:146

Still full cover at home, 2-4" of corn snow. Groomed up okay considering how thin it is.

12 PM

Skate Ski (Schneckenstein) 56:53 [4] 8.02 km (7:06 / km) +208m 6:17 / km

One leg of the women's WC relay from this morning. Lots on big trails.
Bad route choice to 5, took longer flat route to avoid narrow steep climb, ended up on a couple hundred meters of dirt gully. Should have bit the bullet and skied the short route or even run it. Then coming back went the short route and ran down the pitch, but probably could have skied it. Lost 3-1/2 min between the two legs.
Another warm day in the 40's, snow wet and slow in the exposed areas. HF10 was ok; pure fluoro would have been nice. Also some black stuff to repel the dirt and pine sap would have helped, too.

Tuesday Jan 26, 2016 #

Skate Ski warm up/down 35:00 [2] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)

12 PM

Skate Ski race (Muhlleithen Germany) 1:02:00 [4] 9.23 km (6:43 / km) +188m 6:06 / km

Same sprint O course as the World Cup, only after they were done. Three courses thru the local neighborhood, in side yards, back yards and some soggy fields. Teamed with the World Famous Sharon and we outlasted 4 other teams who DQ'd to come in 7th.

Monday Jan 25, 2016 #

3 PM

Skate Ski (Klingenthal ) 39:19 [3] 5.79 km (6:47 / km) +107m 6:13 / km
ahr:121 max:152

Moved west along the hills to Muhlleithen to another venue for more races. Well above freezing, cloudy. Snow cover adequate but soggy.

Walked from hotel to trail (30 m) and skied along the Kammloipe, a groomed ski trail that runs for about 35 km. They had an xc race on it yesterday that let you go 26 or 43 km and started from our event arena.

Trail was packed ok but a little soft for skating. Just a little distance to stretch the legs.

Sunday Jan 24, 2016 #

Skate Ski warm up/down 7:00 [2] 1.0 km (7:00 / km)

Temp right at freezing, HF8 ran fine. Snow like plastic, just starting to transform.

Skate Ski warm up/down 18:00 [2] 2.47 km (7:17 / km)

12 PM

Skate Ski race (Fitchtelberg Long) 55:00 intensity: (25:00 @4) + (30:00 @5) 8.9 km (6:11 / km) +202m 5:33 / km

Last WMSOC race on more of the same map. Extended it up and down.
Three controls in a row with total 150m climb straight up the hillside. Really tired towards the top of that.
Took a misguided shortcut to the first control and added 3 contours climb to that leg and maybe a minute.
Course and snow were less sketchy on the downhills today, so those were ok. Did make one route choice on our longest leg to climb and then descend a long grade, rather than going down the steep hill and then up, just to avoid the tourists and kids walking down the trail. Turns out I probably picked the fastest route, even if I did go slightly off the printed map. I extrapolated two trails and figured they met just beyond what we could see. Proved to be correct.
Ended up 9th today.

Saturday Jan 23, 2016 #

Skate Ski race (Middle 2) 49:06 [4] 6.76 km (7:16 / km)

Fog, freezing rain, snow, -1C. Glasses and visor freezing over. Still, started good, 3rd to first control. Then 3 of us converged on the third control at the same time and I got body checked face first into the fresh powder. Couple minutes to get enough away to see and took off a little prematurely downhill, couldn't really see and crashed again.
After that ran conservatively for awhile, down a moderate hill on my butt. Gradually got back into it and did the last half ok.
Ended up 9th for the day and combined out of 15. Could have been a couple places higher without the mishaps.

Friday Jan 22, 2016 #

Skate Ski warm up/down 8:00 [2] 1.0 km (8:00 / km)

Skate Ski race (Middle 1) 34:31 [4] 5.3 km (6:31 / km)

Cold today, in the teens and windy. Snow cold overnight. Wax okay, but not super hot. Used LF5 with Swix cold rocket fluoro. Most of the trails were choppy so it didn't matter too much. Course folded in on top of itself with loops.
Technically no mistakes, dragged a little up one early climb. Finished middle of the pack of 15.

Skate Ski warm up/down 20:00 [2] 2.2 km (9:05 / km)

Event: WMSOC 2016

11 AM

Skate Ski (Oberwiesenthal ) 37:00 [2] 5.3 km (6:59 / km)

In Germany for World Masters skiO champs. Just got enough snow here in the past week to hold the races, about 15" on the ground. Some coming down on the drive up yesterday on sketchy roads from Prague. Clear and cold today. Forecast for single digits tonight.
Model set up with the SI-air timing. Practice testing the distance sensitivity. Flashes at about 2' unless it's on the same wrist as the Garmin watch, then you have to get within 6". Definite interference. Lesson: wear on different wrist.
Snow soft but setting up. See what we get tomorrow.
2 PM

Skate Ski 8:00 [2] 1.3 km (6:09 / km)

Wax testing. Put LF5 over the Start green medium fluro. Okay, but temp will be colder tomorrow.

Monday Jan 18, 2016 #

3 PM

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley) 50:17 [3] 8.12 km (6:12 / km) +38m 6:03 / km
ahr:119 max:147

3" more snow overnight so trails are getting okay. Groomed fields and Pines and then skied. Cold fresh snow somewhat slow.

Sunday Jan 17, 2016 #

7 PM

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley) 48:25 [3] 8.31 km (5:50 / km) +9m 5:48 / km
ahr:90 max:141

Night ski on new heavy cover. Couple inches of sleet with a light crust. Didn't groom, and skiing was fine. Stayed in the fields, but other areas are probably okay, too.

Saturday Jan 16, 2016 #

5 PM

Trail Running (McDaniel College) 29:00 [2] 2.0 mi (14:30 / mi)

Down in MD for a party. Running around the college and golf course and some briars with Ruthie before hand.

Friday Jan 15, 2016 #

12 PM

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley) 56:06 [2] 10.08 km (5:34 / km) +14m 5:32 / km
ahr:114 max:133

Mix 20% grey ice and balance loose powder. Groomed with teeth down and didn't change conditions much. Proved okay for skiing, but had to be careful where I pushed off with the skis.
Have enough powder to cover the trails pretty well, maybe a couple inches. Will see what falls this weekend before I start shoveling or blowing it.

Wednesday Jan 13, 2016 #

3 PM

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley) 56:11 [3] 8.26 km (6:48 / km) +25m 6:42 / km
ahr:72 max:130

At home with 1" cold windblown on top of ice. Groomed to make it adhere with varying success. Really could use a bit more on top.

Monday Jan 11, 2016 #

9 AM

Skate Ski 1:41:34 [3] 21.16 km (4:48 / km) +271m 4:31 / km

Last ski before heading out. Wet sleet and some rain froze up and got chomped by the pisten bully and then refroze. Was reworking the corduroy again as I skied. Not bad, quite fast with temp in the teens. Limited trails open, nothing past the power lines except 31. But enough for a good workout and hit a couple twice.
Home to see what's around locally.

10 AM

Skate Ski (Mont St Anne) 1:22:09 [3] 15.39 km (5:20 / km) +206m 5:00 / km

Lumpy plastic snow just over freezing. Tour around mid mountain. Rain forecast, but holding off.
2 PM

Skate Ski 1:39:00 [3] 17.7 km (5:36 / km)

Afternoon went higher to avoid rain. Snowed all the way up St Hiliare. Couple inches new snow smoothed out the V2. Totally deserted; locals headed home after lunch. Nice and quiet except for the power lines crackling.

10 AM

Skate Ski (Mont St-Anne) 1:48:06 [4] 21.0 km (5:09 / km) +416m 4:41 / km

The rest of the crew were classic skiing, so I took off skating solo. Around 31 and then out St Hilaire to the end. Back on 22 which was interesting with swooping downhills and not sure they would end up.

Skate Ski 1:26:51 [3] 13.87 km (6:16 / km) +202m 5:50 / km

Lightly snowing after lunch, decided to Classic. Got the VR45 right, but a little drag at first. Scraped over a stick a couple times and then ran terrific. Classic really can be fun!

Friday Jan 8, 2016 #

2 PM

Skate Ski 1:20:46 [3] 13.65 km (5:55 / km) +185m 5:33 / km

Mid afternoon arrival. Onto the trails for a quick circuit. Sweet to be on real snow and not slush or frozen corn.

Thursday Jan 7, 2016 #

3 PM

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley) 55:31 intensity: (45:31 @3) + (10:00 @4) 11.47 km (4:50 / km) +6m 4:50 / km

Added 50# wgt on the groomer and cut up the frozen granular.
Warmup lap, then one pushing the pace and a couple more easier.

Wednesday Jan 6, 2016 #

4 PM

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley) 1:01:58 [3] 11.34 km (5:28 / km) +19m 5:25 / km
weight:164lbs

Scraped the surface a little, but really need to dig in more to chop and smooth the frozen granular.
Three laps V1, V2alt, then a lap no pole and one double pole.

10 AM

Road Running 1:01:56 [2] 4.44 mi (13:57 / mi) +114m 12:55 / mi

Pleasant morning for a run -- calm, clear, temp nudged up to single digits. Ran Cummings and felt good so headed down Rte 11 for some more.
4 PM

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley) 50:37 [3] 9.19 km (5:31 / km) +7m 5:29 / km

Frozen granular, hard, fast and lumpy. Should have groomed first, but getting late so skied as is. Not very good, but even not so good skiing is better than no skiing.

Monday Jan 4, 2016 #

11 AM

Strength (Rec center) 45:00 [3]

Balance on bosu one legged plus hop from one leg to other
Machines heavier wgt
Pullups 10
Ski erg warmup then 500 m 1:57.2

Sunday Jan 3, 2016 #

3 PM

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley) 58:00 intensity: (40:00 @3) + (18:00 @4) 11.41 km (5:05 / km) +85m 4:54 / km

Laps to loosen up, then skiO on most of Kenny's course from Xmas. Then again in reverse order. Faster in reverse, and a little shorter with better routes. Rules were I had to stay on a trail -- no bushwacks.

1 PM

Skate Ski (Danby Rd) 2:10:06 [3] 24.08 km (5:24 / km) +483m 4:55 / km

Tour up over Mad Tom Notch with Alex and Ed, skittering over postholes on the crusty road. Forest road further on had not been busted up at all, just crust, so we nixed the proposed traverse over to the Danby Rd.

Drove back to Langrove for a shot up the Danby-Mt Tabor road, which is kind-of closed to car traffic in the winter, as in not allowed. Side jaunt up another forest road to dead end. Long climbing 2 km hill, skis really buzzed on hard packed surface. The back down and further up Danby road almost to Devils Den. Then long descent back to car.

Stiff Peltonens ran well on hard snowmobile packed surface with LF8 wax, actually probably too warm for the temp. Climbs were good and so was double poling. Had trouble when the trail flattened out or dropped slightly, fighting balance on the slightly rutted snow. Alex just cruised along with her smooth V2 and I was spending most of my energy stayed upright, not on propulsion.

Good ski day with fun companions.

Oh, back at the car we saw headlights coming down the trail. Snowmobiles? No, a NY pickup had driven the full length of the 15 mile closed, unplowed road from Danby. Closed? We never saw any sign saying that...

12 PM

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley) 1:27:00 [3] 14.79 km (5:53 / km) +60m 5:46 / km

Groomed the Pines today. Base still pretty solid. Two wet patches melted in the fields where the cover is always thin, will truck in some roof snow later.

Laps in the fields, Pines and a little up Stairway to Heaven, however, that one was too slick coming down and needs more pulverizing before it's good. The Whale in the Pines on the other hand is just right and caught some air off it as I came down the hill.
4 PM

Trail Running 36:56 [2] 1.7 mi (21:43 / mi) +96m 18:29 / mi

Around trails just before dark. Snow set up pretty firmly, no post-holing. Neighbors hit the far end with their snowmobiles, kind of expected over the holidays. A bit of open water there, tracks carried some mud onto the snow, yuck!

Soft enough snow the going was slow and a fair effort on tired legs. That was okay, just nice to be out again with gentle snow falling.
