Bicycling 30:00 [2]

4 miles. Early morning to loosen up.

Trail Running (Warm up/cool down) 30:00 [2] 3.0 km (10:00 / km)

O - competition (NA Champs Green 2) 1:15:08 [4] 6.0 km (12:31 / km)
spiked:16/18c

Kendall Lake, Cuyahoga Valley, OH
Much more deliberate and focused. Slowed down a bit and concentrated on every attackpoint. Made a bad route choice to #14, went along the north hill top to avoid green. The hill top was kind of crummy and the leg cost me 3 minutes. Other than that, no mistakes.
Ended up 1st M-55 for weekend.

Bicycling (Cuyahoga Tow Path) 50:00 [2]

5 miles. Morning ride along the Cuyahoga River, Ohio.

Road Running (Warm up) 20:00 [2] 2.0 km (10:00 / km)

O - competition (NA Champs Green) 1:26:46 [4] 5.7 km (15:13 / km)
spiked:12/18c

Ritchie Ledges, Cuyahoga Valley, OH Day 1
Didn't focus hard enough and got caught by some confusing areas on the map. Serious errors totaled 22 min for a dismal performance. Resolved to concentrate more and to pay attention to map and terrain detail!

Bicycling (Colchester) 50:00 [3]

5 miles. Borrowed Kenny's mtn bike for an adventure race in two weeks. Took it out on single track to get used to it.
So what's this climbing over logs with your feet locked into the pedals?
Score: logs 2; tree 1; rider 0
Got to get a new helmet.

Road Running (Chester) 58:00 [2] 6.0 mi (9:40 / mi)

Post office loop.

Thursday May 20, 2004 #

Trail Running (Putney Mtn Trail) 2:43:00 [3] 15.0 mi (10:52 / mi)

Putney Rd to Old Athens Rd and back with Peter Gagarin. Beautiful day, nice trail, good views but a bit hazy. Still struggling on the hills, but fine on flats and going down. Don't seem to be 100% from the rogaine, but getting close. Really a good workout.

Road Running (Rte 11/Cummings) 37:00 [2] 4.2 mi (8:49 / mi)

Sunday May 16, 2004 #

O - competition (HVO Red 2) 1:38:47 [4] 7.38 km (13:23 / km)

Better day: cooler, went out of my way to avoid green areas. Messed up #3 by looking too far N and below it.

Saturday May 15, 2004 #

O - competition (HVO Red 1) 1:58:00 [4] 7.05 km (16:44 / km)

Hot, thick, and a couple of mistakes.

Trail Running (Warm up) 15:00 [2] 2.0 km (7:30 / km)

Sunday May 9, 2004 #

O - competition (Rogaine) 10:56:20 [3] 49.0 km (13:24 / km)

Day 2 World Rogaine Champs.
Night got pretty cold as expected -- probably right about freezing. Lightly dressed and got chilled at stops -- so didn't take any breaks except to reload water.

Missed reading the lower road across the slope N of #93 and did a 2 km detour before we got to the control. This was our only signifcant mistake and it forced us to trim 3 controls and 150 pts from our route in to the finish.

Overall felt totally wiped at the end, probably from the altitude and the distance. Would have covered more distance if the shoes had been ok.

Ended up 7th Veterans with 2370 pts. If I were a week older, we would have been 2nd Supervet behind Peter and Fred.

Control sequence: 30/71/80/46/53/64/95/86/47/60/74/96/66/97/77/58 dark 98/57/89/87/76/94/82/55/83/73/62 day 51/84/68/88/56/93/63/70 HH

Great job by the organizers for a fine meet!

O - competition (Rogaine) 13:00:00 [3] 54.0 km (14:27 / km)

Day 1 World Rogaine Champs, White Mtns AZ
Excellent map, control locations spread out, but not technically difficult. Glen Brake and I teamed up again for this one.

Altitude a factor at 9,000 ft. Flew in Friday afternoon, so really didn't acclimate. Developed some serious heel blisters as the shoes were about a half size too big. Hadn't been a problem, since I used thicker socks for training. However, these packed down after a few hours of running and my foot started sliding around in the shoe. Not much skin left on my heel.

Started in the NW fields and went clockwise. Wanted to do the fields first so we could see the gross terrain features for navigation as well as the marsh areas. Also figured the fields would be colder than the woods at night.

Wednesday May 5, 2004 #

Road Running (Cummings Rd) 22:00 [2] 2.2 mi (10:00 / mi)

Easy short run. Had to save energy to pick up new Kubota today.

Tuesday May 4, 2004 #

Off Trail Running (Boulder Hill) 47:00 [3] 4.5 mi (10:27 / mi)

Cummings Rd to loosen up, then up and down Boulder Hill off-trail. Also a couple 2 minute intervals along the summit ridge.
Up 12:51, down 10:35

Monday May 3, 2004 #

Road Running (Rte 11/Cummings) 44:00 [2] 4.5 mi (9:47 / mi)

Purging run to clear the toxins -- muscle and mental -- from this weekend. Also a bit through the woods to check out a lot for sale.

Bicycling (Chester loop) 30:00 [2]

7 miles
Haven't busted out the bike in two seasons. Bit rusty and still heavy (30#), but then Peugeot used to make them solid. Got to get the butt in shape for adventure racing.

Sunday May 2, 2004 #

O - competition (W Pt green 2) 1:49:00 [4] 5.7 km (19:07 / km)

A false start with the wrong map, then off to an almost good run. Had some magnifying glasses, today, but those steamed up and didn't work for me. Ok until #5 and then could not fathom the contour lines along the ridge on the way to #6. Made a bad assumption and thought the control was on the W slope. Took a while to determine it was on the E slope.

Checked to old map afterwards, and this area around Turkey Hill is quite clearly readable. The ocad/color copy washed out all the detail. It's been said before, but color copies ought to be at 1:10,000.

Saturday May 1, 2004 #

O - competition (W Pt green) 2:44:00 [4] 6.4 km (25:37 / km)

Crappy day. Could not read detail on map, especially fudgey contour lines. Misdirected on #3 and major confusion on #8. Made my own mistake on #10, but by then I was pretty frustrated.
