Easy run through city to downtown area. Started raining halfway through which made it pretty raw.

Touring bike paths through green space in town and out into the lava fields outside the city. Interesting landscape, but bleak in places. Have planted many hardy birch and other trees, which are slowly growing up around the city.

Rain all night, rain at the start -- very wet woods! Trouble finding a 5x7m marsh in the middle of a big swampy area -- much time lost.

Really screwed up 5 controls for 23 min lost. Very intricate terrain, plus distraction of downpour beginning 20 minutes before my start time. Went within 3-5 meters of 3 controls and didn't spot the flag the first time thru -- controls were buried under small fir trees. By finish, the elephant tracks were really muddy. To get to one control on a steep spur, you had to punch the e-stick in as you slid past -- no stopping possible.

Drier terrain today, but well logged-over. Recent slash was mapped, but white areas could be open forest or logged over 5 years ago and still a bit rough. Warm and humid; made the going tiring. Felt like I was going slow, but it actually was my fastest day so far. Lost time on 4-5 controls, but it was only 30 sec or a min.

Tomorrow is a rest day, and we're ready for it. My knee is sore, probably from the clunky Swedish army bikes we use to ride from the campsite to the event center -- one speed, fat tires.

Monday Jul 21, 2003 #

Pushed a lot harder today, and had a mostly good run. Missed my turn-in off a road and had to cut thru garbage to get to the control. Then came out a bit off and had to relocate. Cost 7 min. Should have just turned around and run back 100 m when I saw I went too far. Map very marshy and churned into muck in many places. Many elephant (water buffalo) tracks.

Fun race as always. Lots of people rushing in all directions thru the woods. Managed to ignore them completely until the 2nd to last control. Got to attack point, but didn't locate off there to control 20m away over knoll. Went into search mode instead, and wasted 4 minutes. Had 1-2 min errors on a couple other controls.

Training day. Getting used to the local Uddevalla map. This one must be old, because the vegatation is quite a bit greener than mapped. Looks like its grown over in the logged areas over the past 5 years.

Scattered minor mistakes, 1-2 min each. Pushed pretty hard as I was comfortable with the map and had nothing to lose. Good run. Ended up tied for 18th in C finals.

O - competition (2nd Qualifier M50) 1:13:00 [4] 5.9 km (12:22 / km)

Took it very conservatively. Used attack points throughout. As a result, only minor hesitations around controls and one poor route choice. Better results than day1. Just missed B finals, out of four groups.

Monday Jul 14, 2003 #

O - competition (1st Qualifier WMOC) 1:32:00 [5] 6.1 km (15:05 / km)

Ran hard, but made one large error (8 min) and a couple smaller (3 min). Not used to what is mapped -- they don't bother with smaller rock features including small cliffs. Early part of course was in very intricate terrain. Needed to use better attack points to avoid trouble. Will slow down for day 2.

Track workout at Chester HS. Great track -- rubberized asphalt, new markings; LRHS eat your heart out. 4 @ ~1:31.

Hot. Mosquitos in the shade, deer flies in the sun!
Felt beat from workouts this week. Will take a rest week before WMOC.

Had to wait until after 4th parade to get award -- went for long run in country.

Road Running (Saxtons River 5k Race) 23:15 [5] 5.0 km (4:39 / km)

Neat small town 4th celebration. Race, followed by parade and then street fair. Came in 2nd 50+. Not too fast, but still 1:15 faster than last year.

Road Running (Craigue Hill loop ccw) 1:01:30 [3] 6.6 mi (9:19 / mi) +250m 8:20 / mi

Lunch time run from office. First 1.7 miles are all up to radio tower, then loop does one more hill and descends following stream drainage. Up 19.30, back 42.

Straight up from Underhill St Pk. Heart rate was 172-180 pretty much the whole climb -- that's somewhere over 100% max rate for me. Clear with okay hazy views on top.

Trail Running (Down) 42:00 [2] 2.7 mi (15:33 / mi)

Came down the Sunset Ridge trail. It runs along bare rocks for the first half and you've got a view west over Lake Champlain to the Adk's.
