First cover of the season. Wet snow, no kick. Had to try my new skis.
This will be good for night skiing with a headlamp. The woods trails will work during daylight.

Running on draft of map for Burnt Mountain A meet -- will do vetting.

Off Trail Running (Ridge run) 45:00 [3] 4.0 mi (11:15 / mi)

Ran ridge and shot compass bearings on stone walls to line up map.
Saw someone at the ridge cabin -- first time ever occupied.

Sunday Oct 20, 2002 #

O - competition (WCOC Trout Brook Red) 1:45:00 [4] 6.7 km (15:40 / km)

Sloppy on #6, didn't have attack point and missed control.
Slipped going down cliff face coming out of #9 and lost map and compass. Found map, but not compass. Ran in a pack to next 2 controls, then skipped #12 and headed off into nowhere land; lost contact with map.
Weekend was a total writeoff.

Up over hill and along ridge. Checked out features mapped Tuesday. Just stone walls and clearings so far, haven't bothered with contours or rocks.

Mapping stone walls onto aerial photo and GPS image. Nice reference lines for positioning features. Discovered the old logging road up west side of ridge continues over top and down east side -- can do a loop that connects both ends of our property.
Weather clear and chilly. Great for running.

Missed control #2 and had two relocate twice. Finally pace counted in from the S and hit the pit. Seemed like the pit was a bit off from the location on the map. Lost about 13 minutes on the leg. Otherwise, had a good run.

Off Trail Running (Cool down) 30:00 [2] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Went back out and checked my problem control. Satisfied myself the pit is about 30 meters S and a bit higher on the slope than mapped. It is only 40 m N of the stone pile, not 100 m. Probably missed it by 5 m. Need to scan more on the way into the control circle.
