Note

I'm in for Monday to get a titanium plate in my shoulder. Ortho says the multiple pieces need to get tied together for a strong mend.

Thursday Jun 29, 2006 #

Note

Saw ortho associate today. Not sure whether I need a plate in my collarbone. Will check with the senior meat hacker and let me know what they recommend.

Race Across America: San Diego -> Atlantic City

Bicycling (RAAM Parade Ride) 1:00:00 [3] 13.2 mi (4:33 / mi)

First riding is all together at a slow pace. Then we stopped for the interval start.

Bicycling (RAAM) 2:30:00 [4] 58.0 mi (2:35 / mi)

Actual start of race. Greg and I were swiching every 30-40 minutes. Fast pace, up until my crash about 4 miles from end of our leg. See details under RAAM Discussion.

Bicycling (Oceanside, CA) 35:00 [3] 8.5 mi (4:07 / mi)

Ride over to center for official team photos and then a ride up the bike trail a little ways to stay loose.

Tomorrow is a 13 mile parade ride and then we are released at 30 second intervals into the race. I'm scheduled for the first 21 mile segment including the parade. Further pulls will be be shorter -- about 10 miles -- so we stay fresher. Greg and I plan to switch every 30-40 minutes. Brad and Dave may go a little further.

Bicycling (Oceanside, CA) 1:12:00 [3] 19.0 mi (3:47 / mi)

Easy ride with Greg to burn off travel crazies. Around Oceanside and on bike path along river.

Everyone out okay to Oceanside except Pete, who is coming in tomorrow. Got registered and started covering the bikes with reflective tape for night riding.

Bicycling (Gassets CW) 1:08:00 [3] 19.4 mi (3:30 / mi)

Started to go down 103 run, but train blocked crossing. So headed north on 103 and rode along side the tracks and kept even to Gassets (it wasn't the Metroliner). Turned off east just as it started to rain hard. No problems until I took a shortcut through N Springfield to avoid traffic. Road went downhill and then over a plank wood bridge, which was 75' of really dicey slick surface.

Nice to get out after 3 days of cabin fever, even if it is still raining.

Bicycling (River loop) 1:23:00 [3] 23.5 mi (3:32 / mi) +150m 3:28 / mi

From E end of Toonerville Trail pkg, N on 5 to Ascutney, across river to 12A and 12, down to Charlestown and back over river. Mostly flat with rolling section in NH.

New bike is on its way to CA, so ran with the old Steel Torpedo. Forgot how stable and fast it is on the downhills (still a brick going up). Fun ride.

Bicycling (Harriman E out and back) 2:10:00 [3] 36.4 mi (3:34 / mi)

With Brad and Eddie From Kanawauke up 7 Lakes Dr to 6, N to 293 and E across West Point land. Started S on 9W, but traffic and shoulders of road were in poor riding condition. Turned around and road back the way we came. Good weekend rides.

O - competition race (HVO sprint) 38:08 [4] 2.2 km (17:20 / km)

Got to run Saturday's sprints after all, on Sunday. Couple mistakes cost quite a bit of time. After the morning ride, so legs were tired.

O - competition race (HVO sprint #2) 19:07 [4] 1.9 km (10:04 / km)

Much better than first sprint; no problems except came into last control at top of cliff and had to climb down and back to bag, 10 sec. Almost got attacked by mama goose at same spot.

Trail Running warm up/down (To Sebago) 1:30:00 [1] 4.0 mi (22:30 / mi)

Parked at Kanawauke and ran down to the sprints at Sebago and back. Also picked up controls from part of the courses.

Saturday Jun 3, 2006 #

Bicycling (Harriman N loop) 1:21:00 [3] 21.5 mi (3:46 / mi)

With Brad from Sebago to Tiorati, Arden Valley Rd to 17, S to 106, back to Kanawauke and Sebago. Bumpy drop down Arden Valley, nice climb up 106. Pretty good rain for much of the ride.

Bicycling (Harriman S loop) 1:42:00 [3] 29.0 mi (3:31 / mi)

With Brad and Eddie from Alan Young's in Suffern, across 202, up Gate Hill Rd, down Lake Welch Dr and 7 Lakes to 17; back to start. Mean climb on Gate Hill, bottom has new asphalt; upper half has new tar and gravel -- with deep loose gravel on the road.

Note

Was supposed to do the junior sprint-o at Sebago, but police had the woods shut down. Some wacko was on the lamb in the woods and they didn't want another 50 wackos out with him in the rain.

Bicycling (Terrible Mtn -) 1:32:00 [3] 24.4 mi (3:46 / mi)

Started at Benny's as I had to drop off the truck for inspection -- 50 miles in the past year, all snow plowing the driveway.

Warm and humid. Legs felt sluggish. Should have had spaghetti last night instead of chicken salad.
